NO IDLE -- Will '86 Carb Work On An '85 Aero?

Post by nickjaynes »

Bought an '85 Aero yesterday with 800 miles on it but wouldn't idle. Pulled the cover off to find a gaping hole in the body of the carb. where the fuel adjust screw nubbin used to be. Replaced carb body and still no idle...My buddy who's a scooter mechanic swears the needle is probably the problem but he's just guessing over the phone. The vacuum petcock works well. The bike fires up, idles for about 30 seconds and dies. It'll accelerate and drive normally, just have to feather throttle to keep going stop lights...

So I thought I might just get a NEW CARB! (unless y'all have any other suggestions).

I was lookin' at those NOS Aero carbs on ebay and they say they're for '86-'87.
I've an '85. Other than the choke wiring connections, they look similar.

Anyone have any answers on this?

Thanks!

I don't think there are any differences. None significant anyway

you could try making sure the pilot circuit is clear before you buy a new carb

No true, the 1985 Aero 50 carb is a 12 mm carb while the '86-'87 are a 14 mm carb.

Under the main jet is the pilot. Use a soft dowel or something simular both carbs will work on either bike.

Well it will bolt up but the 1986-'87 jetting will probably be wrong. But I would do a crab rebuild first.

So it sounds like the common consensus is that I ought to clean the carb more. Which could certainly be the case.

But since the bike acts the same (idles at start up, runs great w/ lots of power, but won't idle at all after start up) with two different carbs in a row, I am wondering if it's something else.

I will try to thoroughly clean out the carb but are there any other common no idle causing issues to look for?

Just because you tried another carb does not mean that carb is good. Unless the replacement carb is off a KNOWN good running engine....................... This issue is rarely anything other than the carb.

We were told that the motor the new carb was on was running but...who know if that was true...

Yeah OK I'll try going through the carb this evening.

generally running means it will crank, not how well it idles or transitions through pilot, midrange, and WOT. If i wanted to sell my crappy scooter thats what I would say too hahahha
