89' Elite SB50P
Hi, i have an 89 honda elite SB50P, and i would like to know what i can do to that thing to really open it up and let it breathe alot more cus the * 30mph rite now just aint doin it, not lookin for to much but would like a top speed of somewhere around 40mph and some more torque off the line would be nice. What are some things I can do to achieve this?
Re: 89' Elite SB50P
derestrict the exhaust, look on the back of the variator and remove the plate and replace the rollers with 7 gram or 7.5gram., and maybe replace the clutch springs to 1.5k or 2 k grab springs. open the air box(if its restricted) and up jet. to maybe 85 or 88. im sure others will chime in on this. im not to familar with the SB50.

Re: 89' Elite SB50P
ok, well i took a look at the exhaust and the onl;y thing that i can see that is restricting it is where it exits the canister, i can see no restriction in where the pipe actually bolts up to the the jug, and sorry for my ignorance but when your talking about the variator im guessing that your talking aboput changin the weights and springs in the primary clutch. also where would i be able to get springs and weights for the clutch, will the dealership have them or do i have to get them off line, same things with the main jet in the carb, because the dealership only 1 other jet soze available and its only a 75 which is just one size bigger than what is in there now. Also what would be some sites that i could check out tune pipes for it?
Re: 89' Elite SB50P
if i remember correctly the sb50 is not variated. it has a single speed front pulley like the spree.

Re: 89' Elite SB50P
Your SB50 is about normal. As mentioined they are a single speed. with very mild tuning so that they can pull through from bottom to top without shifting.
You can do like I did and convert it to a to a late model drive train. It will give you want you want but will probably double the cost of your bike. It really squirts when you twist the throttle.
Taz bought my old engine and says that he will make it go 50.

I've got the same scoot as you and in the process of reassembling it. Wasn't running when I got it and was missing so many parts. I picked up the 48 mm kit from Taz and a derestricted exhaust form the boards. It's completely apart so I'll keep ya posted on its status.

Re: 89' Elite SB50P
i have the same exact moped as you. my moped came with the exhaust already unrestricted and mine goes about 35mph on flat ground. i am probably going to get a performance cdi, a racing ignition coil, and a jet kit to up-jet my carb. does anyone know what size i should up-jet my scooter to?

Re: 89' Elite SB50P
i found out that the main jet on an sb50p is #68. if i replace the ignition coil, and the air filter, should i up-jet my carb to a bigger size?

Re: 89' Elite SB50P
ok, well i'm not going to replace my ignition coil or my cdi i guess. but i just ordered a new air filter. does anyone know how to de-restrict an sb50p carb?
Re: 89' Elite SB50P
DO NOT bother changing the CDI or the coil as the stock Honda parts are as good performance wise and a better quality item than the supposedly performance items (FYI they lie about any performance increase). Oh and the CDI is NOT restricted. If you change from the stock air box you MUST up jet the carb or you WILL melt your piston.that1mopedguy wrote:i found out that the main jet on an sb50p is #68. if i replace the ignition coil, and the air filter, should i up-jet my carb to a bigger size?
