I'd have to somehow extract the broken (?) on out of the '85 carb the bike is currently running and put the one from the '86 carb into it. But I don't how I'd do that...

yup, you have to figure out some way to cut a small notch in it then you could unscrew it with a small flathead screwdriver as described in the other thread

UPDATE: OK friends, I've got some developments.
I was able to get the broken off idle adjust screw out of the carb.
I was able to swap in the full idle adjust screw from the '86 carb.
I hauled the bike out front and fired it up.
I idled for about 1 minute (estimation) and the idle adjust screw definitely raised and lowered the idle speed.
I thought I was home clear...then it stalled.
Fires right back up but idles slower and slower for about 3-10 seconds then stalls.
If I screw the idle screw all the way in, it'll idle about 5 seconds longer but then will stall.
Bike is powerful as the day is long, and the carb is as clean as I can get it without a carb dip bucket and a high-powered air compressor.

So...I am wondering if I need to look else where...but I really don't know...ideas?

Thanks!

Oh would a video of it idling and dying help anyone figure out suggestions?

you may need to ride it for 10 15 minutes then readjust the air/mixture then adjust the idle screw so that your tire barely spins then back it out a hair :D

so the air mixture adjustment was confusing in the repair manual.

"Air Screw Opening: 1-1/4 turns out"

Does that mean to unscrew it anywhere from 1/4 of a turn from seated position to 1 full turn from seated position
or
anywhere from 1 full turn from seated position to 1.25 turns from seated position

Or can someone just recommend a good air screw adjustment?

One and one quarter turns out fro lightly seated. Then adjust from there for the highest RPM possible with a warm engine.

Don't know. Each engine is an individual and will require different adjustment, turn it one way and if the motor slows down turn it the other. Just find the highest RPM. Then adjust the idle speed screw until the rear wheel does not turn.

Greetings:

I've found the same issue on the Keihins on Hondas and Harleys both: Turning out from lightly seated, the idle climbs to a point then stops rising. Turning out from this maximum-RPM optimal does NOT cause the revs to drop again. Turn in again 'til the RPMs drop a little, then back out a sixteenth or so. Blip the throttle and listen for engine uptake. Play within a quarter turn from there until the response is quickest.

Alright. Now I am just frustrated...
Now the throttle response isn't linear and it bogs down seemingly randomly now...
Still won't idle after running for about 30 seconds...

What next fellas?

Haven't checked the plug yet since there's cover over the head and the rubber nipple over the top of the plug...

you've tested the bystarter and checked the o ring real well?

the rubber nipple slides off of the plug this leaves a hole big enough to get a spark plug socket over the plug and remove it. you don't have to remove the head cover.

Have you replaced the original fuel and vacuum lines. The old lines have a bad habit of falling apart inside dumping crap into your fresh cleaned carb.
