Warm restart problems

Post by gman75 »

My spree starts right up from cold on the first kick.

However, after riding 10-15 minutes, if I happen to stall out, it is a b*tch to restart, it takes like 20 kicks while giving it gas and then it barely catches and I have to throttle it like crazy to bring it back to life.

Carb is clean (all 3 jets), new air filter, and the bystarter needle is sitting in the bottom of the hole - (the spring and little black pieces broke)

Any ideas?

Noiseguy is referring to the fact that my Spree has an '89 Elite engine. I am using a Spree carb.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure the jet is a #65 - what came with the carb.

Elite E, SB50. Not sure what the main jet should be on that, but maybe someone knows... on the SE50s they're running an 80 or 85, and I'm wondering if you need to upjet a bit.

Theory is that you're running lean and getting too hot after running it a bit. You could also change down to a colder plug... what are you running now? On the NGKs, the number gets smaller as it gets colder.

I'm running a BPR6HS - the kind recommended for Spree. I dont know if Elite E requires something different. I just changed to a #68 main jet now, will let you know how it goes.

I believe the BPR4 is colder, in the service manual it refers to the "extended riding" plug. That's the cold one.

Reason I'm asking about plugs and jetting is that I'm wondering if you're running lean and overheating; if so it will quit on you after about 10-15 minutes and not restart until cooled. A non-working oiler will do this too, or missing fan and/or shrouds.

If it's not overheating then your problem is overly rich jetting; like trying to start a hot bike with the choke on, it just won't go.

The colder the plug the higher the # for ngk's between an 8 and 9 you can tell it's a colder plug becasue of the coating on it, the 8 has gold tone to it where as the 9 has a silver tone that does not cunduct heat as well!
