Spree bogging down with air filter?
When i bought my Spree it did not have a cover or airfilter.... just a bottle cap with a hole in it over the intake. Well i decided to pick up an airfilter and now the spree bogs down past 3/4 throttle. Im just running the airfilter, not the cover. What should I do to correct this problem? I know the bottle cap method isn't the best for the spree....
Re: Spree bogging down with air filter?
And until you put the cover on the airbox it will continue to bog until you melt the piston and ruin the engine.

Re: Spree bogging down with air filter?
Well I have a cover coming in (Supposedly, i purchased off of a member but he hasn't got it to me/returned my emails) when i put the cover on I would think that it would even bog more being that there would be less airflow coming through. Do I need to adjust the carburetor pin? if so, how many notches and in what direction? Any help would be appreciated, I'm new and just want to restore/maintain this scooter so that it lasts many more years.
Re: Spree bogging down with air filter?
No, it is bogging because the motor is TOO LEAN, not too rich. The cover will richen it up. being lean is why you are endanger of melting the piston.OptimusRhymes wrote:Well I have a cover coming in (Supposedly, i purchased off of a member but he hasn't got it to me/returned my emails) when i put the cover on I would think that it would even bog more being that there would be less airflow coming through. Re: Spree bogging down with air filter?
if that is the case, why does it run great with no filter and no cover? No bogging.
Re: Spree bogging down with air filter?
You said it had a cap in it with a hole in it. That restricted the air.OptimusRhymes wrote:if that is the case, why does it run great with no filter and no cover? No bogging.

Re: Spree bogging down with air filter?
yes it did, But the hole was about the size of a quarter, which as you know is just about the size of the intake hose. So it really did next to nothing.... maybe the previous owner had adjusted the carburetor so it would run like that? Im really not sure... I just want it to run good with the correct filter/cover combination. Any help with how to go about adjusting it would be appreciated.

Don't screw with anything until you get the airbox cover and install it. There may very well be nothing wrong.

When it was new, it ran well with all the correct parts in place, with all the right factory settings. If yours runs any different with the right settings and all the parts installed, there is something wrong that needs attention.
You have been advised correctly that doing something different can cause major damage. Running a two stroke engine lean will melt the piston. You may get away with only a new piston, but more probable is a bore and sometimes even a crank if the damage is severe.
Dont cause a couple hundred $$ of damage for a $10 air box and filter.

Re: Spree bogging down with air filter?
The scooter would climb to just about 30 and not bog at all with the bottle cap setup that it had when i bought it. Now after installing the factory filter I can get it to about 23, but only if i play with the throttle and get it in the perfect position. Full throttle it will bog down to 10... Hopefully the jagoff I bought and paid for a new cover (spree-mart 24/7) will actually send the part to me... but I have a strong feeling he ripped me off. Im not going to touch the scooter until I have that part... then I'll continue narrowing down the problem.swimmingfree wrote:brake down the carb and set it up by the book ... new hi jet and pin in the middle ..

Re: Spree bogging down with air filter?
ill bet the other person up jetted the carb or drill out the jet and move the pin in the slide and use the cap to restrict the air flow ... if i was you i wood keep the cap you may need it ... when to get the part the spree may run rich and you my lose top speed even you put the carb back in spec ... i wood not do a thing till you get the cover.. as for what you pay for it there hard to find and thay lose the tabs fast so there not cheep .. there's a fue parts that are the same way the petcock cover is another one ..not cheep and ezey to lose ..

Here's to hoping your part arrives by the end of the week. I know how frustrating it can be waiting on jagoff shipping and handling!

Re: Spree bogging down with air filter?
Well my filter cover finally came in... I installed it and took the scooter for a ride. It seemed to be doing much better than before and accelerated smoothly all the way to about 30. I rode for about 3 minutes and it started acting up and bogging.... then died. There was only a tiny bit of gas in it so i walked it to the station, filled it up and it ran fine for another 3 minutes then bogged and died. Any ideas??? After just those short rides the scooter smelled and felt very hot... a burning smell. I'd really like to sort out this problem before something breaks. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks!
