I push the start button and nothing happens

Post by griffit1 »

I bought a used wiring harness (in great shape) off ebay, and used it to rewire my '84 Spree.

The tailight, brakelight, and turn signal lights work. The headlight, oil light and high-beam indicator do not work. The horn is definitely broken.

I have tested all of the wiring and switches for continuity (they're working) and replaced the ignition switch (the old one was corroded).

Also, I have tested the starter and the starter relay. They work!

I have compared all of the wiring connections with the wiring diagram and cannot find a mistake, yet when I turn the bike on and press the start button, nothing happens. The starter relay doesn't even click.

Any ideas?

BRAKES IN TO START

Post by DENMANSHAFFER »

THE STANDARD SPREE REQUIRES EITHER OF THE HAND BRAKES TO BE APPLIED IN ORDER FOR THE STARTING CIRCUIT TO COMPLETE.

I also would like to add:

If you have the brake lever in and it still won't start, check the inline fuse on the positive (+) battery cable...mine was blown and my push start would not start the bike. Luckily I have a kick starter! 8)

AAhhh... frustrating.. well I'm glad someone else was having this problem at the same time. I would have driven myself nuts trying to figure out why I couldn't start my scooter.

Where could I get one of those positive battery cable fuses??? Mine is blown and I'm having the same problem starting my spree with the click.

Also, took the bike apart and put it back together. May have put the head on in the wrong direction. Does this matter. I'm hesitant to take it off again because I just put a new gasket on it.

Also, the spark plug cable won't fit on all the way. I have a Bosch Platinum spark plug in there, it was on it when I bought the scooter. The ignition wire just site somewhat loosely on the spark plug head.

Thanks,

Rob

Also, took the bike apart and put it back together. May have put the head on in the wrong direction. Does this matter. I'm hesitant to take it off again because I just put a new gasket on it. Yes, it matters as it effects engine cooling.

Also, the spark plug cable won't fit on all the way. I have a Bosch Platinum spark plug in there, it was on it when I bought the scooter. The ignition wire just site somewhat loosely on the spark plug head. The spark plug is the WRONG plug, you have to use plugs that you can unscrew the tip off of for the cap to go on all the way. Besides the Platinum plug are just costing you money with no increase in performance or MPG.

Thanks,

Rob

Ok, so the spark plug has threads on the top. It has a very small head with threads on it. So is this what you mean?

Im curious to know if my spark plug wire is bad. Because when I put the wire on the head, it just sits loosely on there.

Also, I took of the starter relay today because it was just clicking when I would try to start the thing. So I connected a test cable from the positive battery terminal to the starter motor and it would turn over so I know the starter motor is good. I just am not sure where to go from here!

Thanks.

Your spark plug is the problem. The cap on top of the plug has to be removed by unscrewing it.

My spark plug already has the top off it.

Also, bought the right spark plug today and took the cap off (unscrewed it).

It's not the spark plug.
