2001 sr50 gear change question

Post by Simonsr50 »

I have an 01 sr50 that I'm looking to upgrade a little. Right now its basically stock with the air box tab removed, upjet, keli variator, and higher engagement springs. I am looking to put a set of 9.8-1 gears in it for a little more top end speed but I'm concerned about climbing hills. Will the low end loss be noticeable? also is there anything else ill need to change clutch wise to compensate? and what kind of top speed will i be looking at on flat ground with a 200lbs rider? how hard are the gears to change and where can i buy them?

Going with those gears for a stock engine setup is perfect. You will need to get lighter rollers to compensate for the gears and a 1k center rear spring. Not that much lowend will go away when going with those gears and hill climb should be ok. Your topspeed your looking at around 50-55mph. You can find those gears on ebay or you can email vt cycles or moped company in hawaii. You will need to press off the old gear and press on the new one. So a 20ton press will be needed.
Nothing like getting stroked!

Greetings:

Wise is Baka-san, but I disagree with
Your topspeed your looking at around 50-55mph.
The Robust-running nearly-new all-stock motor and 9:1 gears, Flash 3 never exceeded 49, with a... - a-hem - stout quartering tailwind. That was with 50 miles on the odometer. If the power ain't there, you won't see 55 without a hill. With one, however, the 9.8s won't hold you back like the stock gears might.

I would say 44-48 gps verified depending on the variator. Taz also sells that ratio.

your top speed will depend on the your setup.
gps verification is recommended
my guess would be in the 45mph+

I'd say keep tweaking (adjusting) your setup until you find something that you really like.
I keep on trying new things to see how it changes, if there's any at all.
Stuff like changing the weights, trying a different variator, etc.
