how hard is it to get the crankcase off to look at everything

Do the compression check first you could do more damage opening it up if you dont know what your doing.You would have to replace all the gaskets as well if you were to do that

Do not start ripping stuff apart.

You can probably borrow a comp gauge from somewhere.

Lots of autoparts stores have a loan a tool program

i'd have to tear it apart if i got a low compression though right?

Autozone, O'Reillys, Advanced Auto Parts, etc., etc., sell and loan compression gauges. How old are you, and why don't you have money to get one? :crazy:
