Re: Looking for Scooter Mechanic in Michigan
50 is plenty fast for me on a scooter. And since it will be used pretty much all in town (traffic, lots of stop and go, never running higher speeds for more than 3-5 minutes, low to midrange power bank would be great.

That's 50mph...

Re: Looking for Scooter Mechanic in Michigan
I'd trade gears for at least 8.44 instead of those 7.5s

Re: Looking for Scooter Mechanic in Michigan
In theory, won't the higher gearing give me better mpg? I know it'll mean a bit of a sacrifice as far as quickness getting off the line but that might be OK.
Only thing I don't know is how the stroker kit affects things (quickness, mpg).
Also, any worries about longevity of this set-up?

In theory, yes. There is a sweet spot between tall gears that labor the engine and short gears that wind the engine out. I said 8.44 because you would have quicker acceleration and still see 50 without having to wind out the engine.

Thanks eliteguy50 - makes total sense.
Hope you don't mind me asking but is the recommendation on the 8.44 from personal experience or a judgement call/calculation? Either way you know more than I do - just wondering.

Re: Looking for Scooter Mechanic in Michigan
I am currently running 8.44 in one of my engines but nothing else is the same about our engines. I do not have a ministroker. Tjamz has built several different combinations and I know he has run 8.44 gears. After riding it, he can surely recommend or dismiss different ratios. In general, 9.19 (often called 9:1), 8.44, and 9.8 have to be the most common aftermatket ratios on the board. Several run taller gears but that is not the majority choice.
Look at the Tooth Tally thread in the tech docs section of the board for calculations of speed at a given rpm with certain gears. It should also link you to the wiki page.

Most people that attempt to mix ministroker cranks with a polini bore, end up switching back to a stock crank.
I did the compression test today. 155psi

I am SOOOO glad I came here! Thanks for all the information.
So for longevity, it seems I should switch to a stock crank and keep the Polini bore kit, right? Oh, and also look at changing gearing. Should I even think about staying with the ministroker crank and going to a stock bore? Just looking at options (and asking people "in the know" to shoot them down as deemed appropriate!).
Thanks!!

No, you would be keeping the problem areas and getting rid of the performance gains. The stroker is a lower quality metal. The stroker generates more heat and compression but without a stroker bore, you will not see the full potential. The stock bore will heat up too. By keeping the Polini BBK, you will have expert hand porting and quality metal. No matter which crank you choose, I would keep the polini bore.

Re: Looking for Scooter Mechanic in Michigan
I have a 78CC Aluminum Nicasil bore, on my elite, that goes 55mph and get there pretty quick
It has 8.4:1 gears

I could swap that engine on to your scooter, and you could trade me your engine.
You would have a reliable running scooter that will do 55mph

Sounds like a con to me. Trade a block with a cheap bore and stock crank for a block with a expensive bore and mini stroker? The nikasil and stock crank will be more reliable for sure but cmon tjams dont rip this guy offTrafficjamz wrote:I have a 78CC Aluminum Nicasil bore, on my elite, that goes 55mph and get there pretty quickIt has 8.4:1 gears

Yeah an offer that sounds like a rip. Jcivince you should see if traffic will trade you his block with the stock crank for your mini stroker block. Dont trade bores theres no sense in that. The nicklesil is good but not worth trading for a cherry polini

How is that any different that what I offered?kingkamehameha wrote:Yeah an offer that sounds like a rip. Jcivince wants a reliable 50mph scooter. If he keeps the polini, he would have to buy a stock crank,8.4:1 gears and pay me to swap it out.
