Was running before tune up, now no go. Very confused...

Post by Bellinghamster »

My '85 Spree was running strong (even with out the air filter) but running a bit rough.

I cleaned the carb per the instructions here, added a new air filter, and put in a new plug.

I've got great compression and great spark, but it won't start now.

Not sure where to start, so I undid the screw to drain the carb and nothing came out...the bowl of the carb should be full of gasoline after a bunch of starting attempts, right?

What should I check next?

Is the vacuum hose for the petcock hooked up? Is the fuel line connected? Is the bystarter wires connected? If all of these are.place your hand over the mouth of the carb and crank the engine till either you feel gas spit out or the engine wants to fire up.
Nothing like getting stroked!

Everything is hooked up and I did feel vacuum. Tried to drain the carb and there was fuel in the bowl this time.

However, when I was feeling for vacuum at the mouth of the carb, I never felt any fuel spit out.

Check the to make sure the slow jet isn't clogged. Mine was, same symptoms you have. Even after I cleaned the carb beforehand, little bit of dirt got in there and gunked it up.
