1986 Honda Aero 50 Oil Drip

Post by Big AL »

Well I have started to wrench on the Honda Aero that I bought....Good shape fresh big bore kit...runs strong...But after sitting in my garage for a week there is a small puddle of oil.....I've degreased the pump area and to the best of my knowledge looks like it is coming for the bottom of the pump base...I tried to snug it up but it is tight...Looking a the Bike Bandit site pictures...I suspect it might be the O-ring on the pump shaft...There does not seem to be a gasket between the pump and engine....I know the engine is getting oil...but it seems to drip more when not running....Should I replace O-ring?? and maybe a dab of liquid gasket on base of pump and engine when re-installing pump?? Or just the O-ring.. Might be a drop every 30 minutes...so it is not severe leak... Other then the oil leak, a new air filter is in order and a couple of screws to snug air breather case...Battery needs a charge, i've a 2 amp charger, Is it worth a try or should I head off to Canadian Tire or Walmrt for a new one?? Any advice is welcome...Semi-handy

Just a comment or two:

I've had pumps leak but they typically leak into the crankcase causing smoky start-ups after sitting a while. Are you sure the leak is coming from the pump - are the oil lines in good shape and secure? If you've had the transmission cover off, I would suspect the leak was from there. You can always remove the pump and set it in a cup overnight just to be sure where the leak is coming from.

No harm in trying to charge the battery and see if it holds but I believe the manual usually calls for 1.5 amps tops. If the battery is more than a couple of years old, a new one is probably in order.

The "o" ring on the pump will only leak when the engine is running. A leak when sitting is more likely coming from the oil line from the tank to the pump.

On some scooters, the rubber grommet into the oil tank sometimes leaks and oil can make it down to the engine. Quick visual on the tank and line may help.

breeze's observation for oil pump failures match mine. Never had one leaking externally.

Bear is right about the oil tank/ oil line.....Just about every Aero 50 that I've owned (and there have been MANY), have some sort of leak at these points. Simple remedy is to check the metal hose clamps on the oil tank line for a tight fit and re-seat them nice and snug. Or remove the hose clamps and tension them a bit more for a "tighter" fit prior to reinstalling them.

Also, just to rule it out, have you properly installed the exhaust/ muffler gasket?

On my 85 Aero NH80 I had an oil drip in that area that I though I would never find. It turned out to be around the base of the oil sending unit - rolling down the tank and lines. Only happened when the tank was full.

Hopefully you will find that it is something cheap and easy to fix.
