85 Spree sputters after 2 times on street block

Post by txrj »

I have just rebuilt my carburetor and replace the petcock on my Honda spree and now I can get it to run well, until I go up and down my street 3 times. It starts right up and I can go up to 30 MPH, up and down and back again on my street, then it starts to "sputter" and "conk out". If I let it set for 3 or 4 minutes, it starts right back up and repeats the process.
History of the scooter was it was given to me. It only started, but would stop once I gave it a little gas. I had someone send me some nice high res pics on rebuilding the carb, which I did. I realized the petcock was not doing what it should, so I purchased a new one and installed. It ran great for about 2 days and then started doing this. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am ready to ride this great scooter around town!
Thanks

When you replaced the petcock, did you replace the filter above the petcock in the tank?

Also try loosening the gas cap and see if that helps.

The try loosening the gas cap, you are running out of fuel.

If that does not help, have you replaced all your old gas and vacuum line with new?

Yes, I have replaced the vacuum and fuel lines too. Also a new spark plug. I tried going down the street with the gas off loose and off, and it did not make a difference. There seems to be plenty of fuel in the bowl because if I loosen the screw at the bottom, fuel comes out.

It is a new plug, but I did not re-gap it. Do you have an idea what the gap should be? I do have a gapping tool, just not sure what size to make it.

Ok, I found in the manual that the spark plug gap should be .025, which it is. I did find that the spark plug was loose, which had me excited at first, but it did not make a difference once I tightened it.

Well, all seems to have cleared itself out. I removed the petcock and filter screen again and used carburetor cleaner to clean it. Also cleaned my tank again. Put it all back together and it seems to be going smooth now. I guess a little piece of dirt can be pretty dirty to the fuel system! thanks for everyone's help, but I now need to go and run this Honda Spree and enjoy the ride!
