ignition diagnostics

Post by mikehailwood »

My 1984 Spree has no spark. New plug does not help. Where can I find a systematic process for diagnosing the sparking system?

yeah, that happened to one i worked on. I would try swapping it with a working used one if you can get it cheap. Its not a hard switch.

Read the repair manual. There should be no need to swap parts with used or known good ones if you take a few minutes and properly troubleshoot the systems.
A simple multimeter (Radio Shack $5) is all you need. By the sound of what this person is asking, the CDI unit may be the place to start and even then it could just be a broken wire. A simple ohm test (continuity) on the coil will alleviate any possible accusations.
Like anytime you're troubleshooting:
Start with the most simple and logical.
Sparkplug
Coil (including the spark plug cap may be loose)
CDI unit
Trigger coil
And above all - the wiring between all these units. Step by step and you can find the problem in less than 10 minutes.
Scoot safely

Thanks to jimpomm, Jim, Tippmann98 and Jerry for providing ideas. See exciter coil resistance for additional discussion of my problem. See wiring at CDI for final resolution of my "no spark" Spree. Thanks again to all. Mike
