New (to me) 1985 honda spree questions..

I am re-building a 1985 honda spree that has been passed around between my friends for years and it has taken a beating. I am doing top end gaskets, exhaust, porting intake and exhast, blah blah blah.. But the thing i am stumpped on is the oil pump. He broke the pit-* on the gas tank wich messed up the oil delivery vacuum mechinisim thing so he just cut the oil lines and used pre-mix gas. i wanted to know how to tell if the pump is bad or not. its not frozen, and the gear is in good shape but i dont know what to look for. and i was wondering if running pre-mix causes any problems? just in case.. My friend said that once he started using pre-mix it ran like *. this is the first oil injection motor i have ever worked on. Thats why im so clueless lol. Thanks-Nate

Premix won't cause issues, though supposedly running the oil pump without a fresh supply of oil may cause the internals to burn up.

As far as I know, (Based on AF05E in an Aero)... There are only 2 lines... one from the oil tank to the pump (Bigger line) and one from the pump to the intake manifold... I don't know what you mean by a oil delivery vacuum mechanism, unless you mean the vac operated petcock... but that only deals with what comes out of the gas tank.

The easiest way to test it would be to hook up all of the lines and purge the air from them... then run the motor on premix (Anywhere between 50:1 and 32:1 - 2.6 Oz/gallon to 4 Oz/gallon - I prefer Yamalube, but any high quality 2 stroke oil is good) with the injection line off the intake (Plug the nipple on the intake). Watch for a drop every (few seconds?) from the pump... if its doing it, its working.

The petcock has NOTHING to do with the oil pump system. The only thing in common is the intake manifold and if it was not intact the engine would not run right or not at all. I do not understand the great misguided desire to do away with the oil pump. It works great and just because you opt to run some premix does not mean you have to disable the pump.

i was just going off of what my friend said. I have never worked on a oil injection engine before, just pre mix. im going to run pre-mx because i want to make my oil tank into a reserve fuel tank and i figure if i get rid of the fuel pump system all together then it will be one less thing to go wrong. i am almost done with the re-build though, painting various parts of the engine, finishing my moded pocket bike exhaust, new piston, rings, gaskets, re-painting plastics etc. Giving the spree a re model.

There is NO fuel pump. Fuel system is gravity feed only. The gizmo on the bottom of the tank is an automatic petcock, which shuts the gas off when the engine is not running. It is a safety device so that when the needle and seat fail, your garage will not have a gallon of fuel spread out all over the floor.

so at most, there would be .75 gallons of gas on the floor.
