oh look another carb question

Post by Archimedes »

I've been working on getting a 86 spree running, so far I've: cleaned carb, set pins/screw back to stock positions (believe you me I finagled with those), replaced trans oil, filled both tanks with gas/oil,
At this point I can start the bike (1/2 kicks) but only when I have my finger covering the intake, okay idles kinda high so I adjust the screw, hmmm okay better but not perfect, but when I give it gas it dies, so start up again and gently lower it down, now when I move forward I remove my finger from the intake and give gas, now the bike will go. But when I slow to a stop it stalls unless I keep giving it gas or put my finger over/in the intake. I understand this is a carbeproblem but I cant figure it out. . :? Image

is this the the only option, I tried two different filters and neither work, same problem, I've been using tape to slightly cover the intakes varying amount but its never quite right. Its seems as if its not just the intake

This is (IMO) the best option for a stock engine, with a stock carb.
Your OEM air filter should look like this http://www.cheapcycleparts.com/model_ye ... ir-cleaner

You may want to read this. http://hondaspree.net/wiki/index.php5?t ... ds_-_Spree.

The stock carb & air filter combo is well designed for the stock engine.

Another option would be to get an aftermarket carb and air filter and rejet for your application.
There are a few members here with spare Spree parts. Perhaps you might want to think about browsing through the For Sale/ Wanted section and either PM those members or even post a Want To Buy (WTB) ad.

This was one of my first lessons when I first got into moped/scooters. I bought a shiny K&N chrome capped filter only to find out, it did nothing for performance, it only looked cool and nothing else.

the real answer is the pilot jet is still clogged. Engine WILL idle when it can flow fuel. You should be able to see light through the PJ hole when held up to light. You should see something nice and round.

If the pilot jet was clogged, the engine would not idle at all. So No to the pilot jet.

so if its not the PJ, does that mean it is the filter, or could it be something else?

Possible but unlikely.

Possibly the needle clip is to far up the needle or,

the float level is too low or,

you have a vacuum leak or,

Need more info or better yet a hands on with the scooter.

Indeed, I took off the carb today to clean it/check float etc , and discovered that the bystarter had a wire not connected, I plan to by I new one now, not to sound silly but could this have been the problem the whole time?Image

I doubt it or you would have had start and run then dying issues. Good luck on finding a new one. They have been NLA for at least 15 years.

None of those fit the Aero 125 which is a one year, one scooter item. The Aero 125 bystarter is a screw-in item, not clip held.

I clearly see a retaining clip in the photo. Perhaps the carb is not the correct one?
