Theoretically....

Post by Mystic »

Just installed the Contesta with V8 typhoon and 21mm carb 48 pilot 122 main clip 1 up from middle. Rich on top and bottom but if I move the clip down it sputters and bogs 1/4th to 1/2, the temps get into the 360s between 1/4th and 1/2 but i cannot richen the needle out any more without it sputtering and bogging down midrange. If I could drop the pilot down that is obviously rich I could adjust the needle more. I am wondering after having changed everything and done everything short of a leak down test is there any way the wiring harness could be grounding out to cause this idle problem I have been having for a while now? Before this issue I could run the carb with a 42 pilot and it would idle perfect. I have noticed that when I sit down on the scoot the idle RPMs drop 2 or 300 rpms. I have literally changed everything

Rich on top is the main jet not the needle and the low end is the pilot jet.

right, the pilot is rich because it wont idle with anything lower than a 48 which is rich and i put the 122 from a 115 so that when i open the throttle past 1/2 it will cool down from being rich. If I can figure out the idle problem i can richen the needle up some to fix the midrange temps. I have changed the manifold, petcock, adjusted everything about the carb inside and out, different coil and cdi different exhaust everything. this problem leads me to believe that it could possibly be in the harness from the stator to the coil?

Your pilot jet should be small enough to where the idle doesnt start to really pick up past one full turn if its too big the idle shouldnt start to pick up past two and a half turns. Read this very carefully. Turn your idle screw up high and the a/f all the way in. Turn the a/f back out a quarter at a time until it no longer increases in rpms. That sweet spot right when you reach max rpms is where you want the a/f. Turn the iddle back down to normal and play with the a/f a quarter in or out from that spot. I set the needle in the middle or one lower than middle and go up or down depending on temps. The only way to get a correct main jet is plug chop plug chop plug chop

I appreciate the advice king but I have read both 2 stroke manuals and adjust the idle screws and jets. I have even changed carbs without any improvement. I guess I need to do a leak down test and check my wiring from the stator to the coil

checked most of the rear harness today found a couple spots that needed attention but nothing that would cause this issue. Decided to put the stock exhaust back on so I could drop the main and move the clip farther down to richen up my midrange. I actually like the bottom end response with the stock pipe as opposed to the v8. will check the rest of the harness soon if nothing but to put new electrical tape on it lol

Yeah fried my headlights because my motor is putting out too much juice. I switched to the newer style elite one and it works like a charm. No where in the jennings book does it talk about rectifiers and grounds. It does however talk about the questions your asking. So once again you should go back and reread his articles. They might hit a light switch in your brain. Seriously your asking people what jets to run and needle clip position. No one can give you a secret formula cause we all live on different climates. Did you even bother with plug chops

Show me anywhere in this post where i have asked what jets to run??? or clip position? I stated what jets I am using etc but the question was whether something in the wiring harness could cause the engine not to idle correctly. And for the record the spree regulator works fine on the elite engine :P I forget sometimes that you just like to cause trouble

Yeah the spree regulator works fine but when you throw a 10k rpm engine in it the headlight wont hold up. Like i said you need to tune your carb a 48 pilot is huge

If a motor makes spark, holds compression, then the only thing left that would factor in idle would be jetting. 2cycle is the easiest motor to play with due to the simple principles. Your carb is what controls idle speed, rich lean, and fuel amount so factors the way they are points to wrong jetting. A Multi pack of jets usually helps.
