scooter wont start
Hey, I just tried to get a 1984 Honda spree running, and when I began, the gas tank was entirely rusdted and the carburetor was junked up.
I cleaned the carburetor with clr, denatured alcohol, and mineral spirits and it looks almost like new. Then I took off the carburetor and cleaned out all holes and unstuck the floater. I know that fuel is getting to the carburetor because when I open up the line from the bowl out fuel drains out of the bowl to the outside. There is carb and engine cleaner in the gas tank, Carb, and fuel lines. The engine actually ran for 20 seconds a few times, but now won't start at all. The battery is connected to a charger so the battery is okay too.
What's wrong and what should my plan of action be?
Thanks- if you respond back I can give any additional information.

Never trust 25 year old fuel lines, Replace then with new and i prefer clear one so you can see what is going on inside. Do the vacuum line while at it. After that pull the carb and clean out the crap that come off the inside of the fuel lines. An inline fuel filter is never a bad idea either. 16910-GB2-900 works.
How did yo clean out the tank?

Re: scooter wont start
Thanks for your help- I had suspected that might be it- might also be crap from the gas tank. I did not know that an inline fuel filter existed- so thanks for the heads up.
I used the guide by Noiseguy from Wikispreedia.

Stock the filter in the tank is all there is on most scooters, but that inline filter is off the Aero 80 and Aero 125 and will not impede fuel flow.jpholloway8824 wrote:Thanks for your help- I had suspected that might be it- might also be crap from the gas tank. Hi, just adding a few things- is the air filter absolutely necessary to run the spree or can i just lower the amount of air in the fuel mix? I took it out and it disentegrated in my hands... I can order another one though if necessary.

i run my spree with a after market filter .. theres 2 ways to do so put the new pod fillter on and tape most of it up so not munch is open ... or get a cap from a pop lid drill 2 3/8 holes in it ..put in on the end of the hose ..then the pod filter...jpholloway8824 wrote:Hi, just adding a few things- is the air filter absolutely necessary to run the spree yes or can i just lower the amount of air in the fuel mix? Re: scooter wont start
Sprees are a tuned system and without the airfilter (running with out one is very stupid and will shorten engine life greatly) some will not even start. Others will start and idle but will not rev up. So yes you need the air filter or you have to rejet the thing like you would if you ran a BBK. 2 strokes are not 4 strokes that don't care all that much about tuning to run.jpholloway8824 wrote:Hi, just adding a few things- is the air filter absolutely necessary to run the spree or can i just lower the amount of air in the fuel mix? Re: scooter wont start
Thanks for your help- went to Lowe's and bought a similar style filter for a lawnmower- fit well and then put WD-40 in the filter and with a little adjusting it now runs fine! Looking forward to having fun with this one.

Re: scooter wont start
Better off using regular motor oil in the filter than WD.

...+1...the WD-40 will not have much effectiveness in doing the intended job....it will be gone quickly...motor oil is way better, that's why service manuals tell us to use it, (or filter oil)...Bear45-70 wrote:Better off using regular motor oil in the filter than WD.

Re: scooter wont start
hey I will get the new air filters tomorrow- stock... as the air filter I mentioned before does not work all of the time- is there any way to adjust the mix for the Max rpms? I know there's not a high range screw in the carb...
Re: scooter wont start
Like all carbs you physically change the main jet. It is part of the tuning process of installing a different carb.jpholloway8824 wrote:hey I will get the new air filters tomorrow- stock... as the air filter I mentioned before does not work all of the time- is there any way to adjust the mix for the Max rpms? Re: scooter wont start
Also- Just noticed today- the left turn signal works fine, but the right turn signal only turns on solid- it won't flash. What can I do about this? something wrong with the relay?
Re: scooter wont start
Usually means one of you bulbs on that side is burnt out or the wrong one. Can't be the relay, the same relay is used on both sides.jpholloway8824 wrote:Also- Just noticed today- the left turn signal works fine, but the right turn signal only turns on solid- it won't flash. Re: scooter wont start
Both lights now out- never been replaced- so i'm gonna put new bulbs in- what kind should I order?
Also where can I order a set of jets for the carb and a big bore kit (preferably 28mm)
