1985 Elite 150 Full Restoration - In Progress

Post by jirobinson13 »

Picked up a 1985 CH150 on Craigslist for my summer project. Here is a bunch of photos and captions I plan to update until the finish:

On arrival:
Fire damage on the front right
No seat or rear panels
Front wheel is really messed up (pictures later)
Paint is just flakes
Muffler cover is rusted
Engine and transmission runs smooth though
Light rust overall, almost no frame rust what so ever
New battery

Taking the front off:
I learned how messed up the front wheel really is

Down to the frame:
Taking it down to nothing

If anyone likes good tools, here are my Hazet 802s, NWS pliers,Stahlwille wrenches, and Snap-On ratchets...I'll upload pictures of the full sets if interested

The stable:

All of that was leading up to the past 2 days. I got stuck on this bad boy:
Image
It worked this way until the top...then it was completely jammed up...badly...

Apparently a 45mm socket is very hard to come by to remove this nut. Luckily Harbor Freight carries a kit for $47 (after a 20% off coupon) which has 20 metric sockets, a breaker bar, a ratchet, and two extenders. I paid more for my used 1/4" Snap-On ratchet ALONE than I did on this huge kit....It is very scary....but combined with my Craftsman C3 impact wrench it got the job done very nicely...
Just for size comparison:
Image

No more nut:
Image
No more fork:
Image

Just to be helpful...The top nut for the steering bars is 32mm and the bottom is 45mm. My stem lock nut was basically hand tight until the top. At that point some PB blaster, some time, and a pair of vice grips got the job done.

Many more updates to follow...

Looks like a worthwhile project and as I also own an Elite 150, you should know that there is also an Elite 150 user's forum. If you need body panels, special mechanical advice, etc. this would be the place to go. Good luck!

Started some rust removal today with some wire brushes & naval jelly. Also found out that I have a crack in the frame on one of the engine mount points. A quick weld should fix it though... Also, Started dissembling the engine and get it ready to be cleaned up.

More rust removal! And carb work! Plus radiator work!

This is phosphoric acid from Home Depot i got for $16/gal after tax. As you can see...it works amazingly well after 1 night of soaking...

Drilling out the seized bolts...the fire incident made everything rust up really bad

Even the radiator fan motor gets a real good cleaning...

New update...

While cleaning up the dash I used a little bit of water on the actual display part and ended up smearing some of the ink :surprise:
Besides that it came out really well and looks good.. Also took the right crankcase cover and valve cover off. The motor looks ridiculously clean. Just gonna spray it with some seafoam and swish and drain some oil. Everything looks amazing mechanically.

Thanks for the feedback guys, it's much appreciated.

Today was exciting...the first layers of paint got put down. 2010 Chevrolet Camaro Synergy Green in a Urathane Enamel was put down on the frame, radiator holder, and entire fork assembly. Here are some pictures:

Tomorrow more paint is getting put down. 2006 Acura Nighthawk Pearl Black will be going over most of everything else.

I'm sure glad you stated this...otherwise i would be wondering why anybody would go this far into a restore on such a far-gone p.o.s..... :urban:
