'86 Honda spree Clutch issues

Post by Spreeboy7118 »

I must say that i am new to the scooter world, this is my first scooter and i LOVE it. But i have some issues. First of all i bought it with less than 4000 miles on it. and it rode fine.... for a while. After a few hundred miles the plates where the belt rides on the clutch broke. So i had to weld it back on. I knew the cause of this being how im over the weight limit by quite a bit. after i welded it it held up for another 100 miles and broke apart again. Ive been doing research because i dont wanna keep running through clutches, so heres my opinion. I know it has a single ratio drive. so im assuming that when it takes off with my weight on it the plates cant take the pressure and break. So what if i put different springs on it, or maybe a variator from another moped on it. I know i would have to do extensive mods to the case around the clutch and front pulley. And maybe even the driveshaft. But i really dont wanna give up on My little Spree. So basically is there anything i can do to relieve the stress on the clutch during takeoff. so it doesnt keep breaking, I would be super happy. Thanks for the help! :coolcruise:

Don't buy it. I've had my 1985 Spree since 1985 and have never weighed less the 225 pounds (295 now) and I have had no clutch issues what so ever. FYI you should have replaced the broken pieces, not welded them, that is why the broke again.

I just assumed that because it was the first to go. You're probably right though. I only welded it because of the lack of money, abundance of welders and the need to use the scooter. Ive been looking on Craigslist for a donor spree. I haven't checked anywhere else. Is there an online site that i can buy a new clutch? Or is the local Honda dealer going to be the best of luck? Or should i just buy used? This is the first part I've had to replace so Im not even sure where to get parts.

Without disassembling the pulleys, belt and clutch you have no clue what is actually wrong. I doubt if it is the clutch, more likely the belt is worn beyond spec.

Ordering part without know is a waste of money.

You're absolutely right, i opened it up and found the inside cover filled with black belt material that had been worn off. also some metal shavings. But i still need to buy a clutch because mine is still broke. And its not worth welding. Thanks bear.

Hm-m-m-m, I may be able to help. I no longer have my ol Spree, but I collected a couple of donor engines back when I had it. I have 2 Spree cutches - 1 is very clean but the shoes are worn. The other is nasty dirty and came off an engine which sat outside, however, the shoes are like new. I always thought there was one good clutch between the 2 if I wanted to dis-assemble and piece together.

Anyway, if you're just looking for donor clutch parts it might work out for you. I also have a brand new Ax24 belt - not a Honda brand - but I'll never use it if you want to give it a try.

I'll get you a pic of the clutches if you're interested - these things are just lying around un-used and they may get you back on the road.

Good luck with the donor scoot. If you need them, here are some pics:

I can't seem to find the belt but it was just an Ax24 from the local industrial supply place for $8.00 - it was recommended on this site as a replacement.
