50 is slow for 8.4 gears

Draw on the variator with a sharpie marker to see how far your belt is shifting up the pulley.

judging rpm by ear is not always the best way.

With all due respect, your cousin simply misdiagnosed his issue.
The rear pulley is Not the "clutch". It is referred to as the Driven Pulley or Driven Face. The clutch is the thingy under the bell.
The stiffness of the Center Spring can NOT "strain the engine". It can move the belt more quickly back into a lower "gear" position, and thereby raise RPM. The engine never knows what's going on downstream... With the throttle open, it'll spin up to the RPM balance point dictated by the rollers and the center spring.

I'm all for free exchange if information and opinions on the Forum, but the following is not a matter of opinion, but of Fact:

All things staying equal,
Stronger Center Spring = Higher RPM
Weaker (Or WORN-OUT) Center Spring = Lower RPM.
Heavier Vario Rollers = Lower RPM
Lighter Vario Rollers = Higher RPM.

I don't understand when you say you can smoke your friends 72cc's, but yours is not fast enough?

are you sure about the gear ratio? You should count it by hand.(turn the wheel once count the number of bell turns)

A worn center spring of too heavy rollers are usually to blame for the problem you are describing.

You should really get a tach and temp gauge too. it really helps to tune these scooters.
