exhaust questions?

i have an 87 spree and am thinking about how to modify the exhaust. i know that some people will modify the muffler itself and others saw off the exhaust completely just before the muffler. which is better and how would these mods affect the performance/sound.

ok # 1 there is a guy one the mopedridersf forum is that you? his nam,e is ike too... and dont saw off, 2 cycle engines need black oressure. i dril 2 holes in the balc going thru 3 baffles

A "sawn off" exhaust doesn't mean removing the entire chamber. I need to post a pic of what I did sometime.

If you saw it off it will be incredibly loud, and won't likely run well.
