Before I start to explain what happend, let me first say I was informed by a Local Police officer (Ashland Police) That in the state of kentucky 50cc mopeds/scooters did not need any kind of Tags, insurance etc. Well the other day I was Riding some backroads after leaving my Aunts house. I got pulled over by a State Trooper who proceeded to rip my A** for not having tags and told me if i wanted to ride it, i better get some tags on it. Along with that, the general coduct of the trooper was terrible. Im taking care of that myself, as far as the laws go is there something I missed? I was pretty heated over the incident especially after being told by another officer that comes in my store that I didnt need anything for it. If you guys know anything that can help me let me know. I have yet to find anything stating that I have to have it tagged..
Thanks, Matt

Looks like you need to register:
"if you plan to ride on streets or highways you'll need to obtain a Kentucky moped license and register the moped" (a regular DL license also works, stated a little further down)

EDIT: Also forgot to say, cops don't know moped laws. Always check with DMV when it comes to paperwork stuff (registration, title, insurance, etc.)

Thats one thing I dont understand. Getting mixed messages from authorities that are supposed to know the law. I guess i got off lucky without getting a ticket. Im definitly going to pass the message on to the cop that told me i didnt have to have it registered and whatnot. Even before posting this i did start the process of getting tags and such for it. I just wanted to make sure i didnt have to do it and put hte money into it. Money is tight right now haha. Thanks alot devenex.

A lot of moped riders will print off the applicable laws for moped operation and keep them around for the LEO if they get pulled over... things like helmet law for moped, registration (or lack thereof), etc. It's a lot easier to call off the ticket with the officer than to head to court to do the same thing.

Little bit of good news, went to the clerks office yesterday and they refused to tag it because its 50cc. So i made them print the Papers stating that it can't be tagged. I even let the clerk do an Inspection on it. Score one for scooter enthusiests in my town.
