New Member - '87 Aero 50

Hey everybody, my name's Brad. Been lurking around here over the past few days and decided to join. I've owned 30 or so bigger bikes over the years, but only 2 scoots. The first being a Ruckus. Anyway, I picked up a rough, but running '87 Aero 50 the other day. I mainly got it as a beater to get back and fourth to campus and run errands around town. I've been doing some maintenance stuff, but the bike doesn't seem to be performing like it should. The acceleration from zero to 10 is really slow and it tops out around 27. From everything I've read on here, that seems a little slow. The only thing I've noticed is the drive cover was full of black crap, I guess from the belt, and little pieces of what looked like tiny springs. Anyway, if I could get it to hit 45-50, I'll be happy. Recommendations on parts to achieve this? Onto the pics...

Check the clutch assembly for missing/broken springs. Spec the belt against the service manual.

The '83 Aero put Honda on the scooter Map and the '87 was the best of the breed. Stock-ish power can net a reliable 43 MPH all day long. To go much faster costs more than the scooter is worth, so decide now if you're up for it. Sometimes Stock is good.

Thanks man, downloaded that a couple days ago. I sold the Ruck back in January so I could have some more plane rental monies. That was more important at the time.

Thanks! I love the scoot so far, but I've got to get this carb squared away. She won't harldy start when it's cold and it reeks of gas. I've looked at a few builds on here. Gives me some motivation for mine. I can't wait to tear into it. Oh, got my first parts on the way today. Scored a Ruckus variator for shipping cost and my tattoo artist agreed to use it as a "canvas"... awesome. I definitely don't want stock. I'd like to see around 50mph out of it. I planned on fabbing a expansion chamber exhaust, a bigger carb w/ pod filter, Ruckus variator, and clutch springs. I'll spring for a BBK if I have to.

Thanks! I'll check into that. Any carb recommendations? Looks like that is #1 on my list since my stocker is acting up.

I am far away from being experienced with these "things", but I had a similar problem with mine. It was the diaphragm (the vacuum part) on the petcock that was leaking.

Of what I have read here, the carb often needs cleaning too.

With his setup, porting can reach 50mph for certain, maybe just a high compression head could do it.

Just a little update. The scoot does have a new petcock in it, so I don't think that's my issue. Spark is good, so I'm leaning towards the carb still. It looked fairly clean, but I sprayed everything down with carb cleaner anyway. I've decided to see what I can squeeze out of the stock displacement & carb. I got some new parts on the way... Polini green 2k clutch springs, 1.5k clutch torque spring, Ruckus variator & rollers, new Honda belt, Ebay pocket bike exhaust. I also decided to pull it mostly apart and clean everything. It's nasty...
