86 spree rear pully/clutch mod?

Post by 77kzrider »

Anyone do any kind of rear pully mod for a diffent ratio? I mean how far the rear pully opens and the belt drops into it. Has it been done?
I have a 86 spree that i got up to 35mph and looking to go a bit higher, and thought about the rear pully opening up but only a little

Im going to do this to mine, this is worth the read. Basically youre milling the front pulley to bring them closer together, effectively making the front pulley larger being that its tapered. Bringing the halves closer forces the belt up higher to ride on a larger part of the pulley. Im going to use the lathe and mill about .125 off mine, and use 2 1/16" washers to fix it. The AX24 belt will work with this mod done..

I know about the front pully mod and already have it done, just wanted to know if anyone has modded the rear pully to open more?

You can cut the rear spring a bit to let it open easier. :thumbwink:

I found a way to let the back pully open more and wanted to see if anyone else has done this mod, by grinding the stops so it can open more and drop belt a little lower, ill have to post a pic of what i mean.
You Have to take apart the two halves and pull out the steel stoppers so both pices come apart. then the rear pully is in two pices and both face plates are seperated to work on!
Anyone know what i mean? Ill Post pics a.s.a.p, so we can see if this works or not, im so eager to see how much this will help, if it does!! :peace:

Greetings:

As far as I can tell, the rear pulley's spring-loaded action ONLY function is to grip the belt and force friction between it and the sheaves - front AND rear - as it wears.

The rear pulley won't "Open more" unless responding to movement of the front loop of the belt; that is if the scooter is equipped with a Variator. The Spree/Elite "E" are not so equipped.

Thus the ONLY ways to increase the belt-drive ratio are to
1. Find and install a slightly shorter belt,
2. Find and install a slightly Wider belt.
3. Machine the front pulleys so they are closer together.

Since such oddball belts are not easily available, that for all practical purposes leaves Option 3 alone.
