Need help finding a muffler for a 1989 Honda Elite SB50P

Post by dmartin95 »

Hello,
Just wondering if anyone can help me out.... I have a 1989 Honda Elite SB50P and the muffler has gone bad. In looking for a replacement, it appears to be a discontinued part. The original part number is: 18300-GS6-670. Does anyone know of a aftermarket direct fit replacement?

I think the SB50P just used a spree engine. Someone else who knows for will sure chime in, but a spree muffler might fit.

Also, you can probably scoop up a used one by making a want to buy post in the For Sale section of this forum.

Thanks for the reply! I'm pretty sure you're right that it's the same as a spree motor, however there are a few differences and I think the muffler shape (the bend) may be one of them. I will look up an 1986 spree as I think that one will be closest....

I appreciate the suggestion for looking for a used one but I'm really skeptical of buying a used muffler.

I'm really hoping someone knows of an aftermarket one.

You guys will have to excuse my post if it sounds too ignorant as i'm by no means a moped mechanic.......

I've owned every year of Spree that has existed and they had different size mufflers.... One of them was an "Iowa" model and had a real small muffler and would only go like 24 M.P.H. The size of the muffler can slow the moped if I recall correctly....

Here's a list I came up with for the Spree motor NQ50.... All of these O.E.M. parts are no longer available, nor manufactured.... However, i'm sure one that allows for roughly the same air flow would work just fine....

Anyone know which one(s) of the following part #'s are the closest to my 1989 Elite original exhaust?

Spree NQ50

1987

18300-GK8-880
18300-GK8-601

1986

18300-GK8-880
18300-GK8-871

1985

*18300-GK8-731
*18300-GK8-671
*18300-GK8-880

* = Superseded by part #18300-GK8-405

1984

*18300-GK8-880
*18300-GK8-671
*18300-GK8-679

* = Superseded by part #18300-GK8-405

The spree exhaust will fit, but the elite e exhaust is less restrictive.

The 1987 spree exhaust is the best flowing of the spree exhaust.

You have a GK8 cylinder on the Elete E which is the same as the Spree. There are subtle differences from the Spree to the SB50P. I have yet to find an aftermarket exhaust for my SB50P's. I'm sure there is a stock one out there.

What do you mean "gone bad"? Honda mufflers are made from boiler-plate steel. You can drive over them with an Abrams tank and they're hardly scratched. Whatever's not working, you should be able to clean it up and keep going.

Good point, typically the most a repair requires is welding. Cheap to do yourself, but if you're like me (no welding skills :() its still probably cheaper to pay someone to weld than buy an OEM muffler that may or may exist on some shelf somewhere.

If its just clogged then that really cheap to fix ;)

I took the Elite to a Honda Mechanic and he told me the muffler is blocked off. It still has all of its original paint, no dents or holes and looks like a good muffler.... I was rather surprised when I was told the muffler is the problem....

I've read on the net that you can cook the muffler on a hot bed of coals and was told by the mechanic that he could cut open my original, clean it out and re seal it... He wanted $75.00 and I was thinking I could buy a new one for that until I realized they were no longer available...

The Elite starts just fine but when I get out and run it for a while it starts to back-fire, after a few more minutes, it will shut completely down.... But the machine is in really good condition otherwise... It has all the original plastic, the instrument cluster is there, and to top it off, the original blinkers and mirrors are there indicating it has not been on it's side very often (if ever)...

With the condition it's in, I'm going to make it my winter project to get the engine in like new condition. I want the security of being able to hop on the 'ole girl and go anywhere with out having engine problems.

I may even try and do some kind of motor swap with a motor that still has parts available... Maybe a DIO motor or something.... One things for sure, HondaSpree.net will be seeing a lot more of me over this winter :geekdance:

Looks like I may have to either have the muffler repaired or buy a used one.... I have scoured Google, Ebay and elsewhere on the net pretty good to no avail.... I can not find any new "old stock"...

Bummer....

I have chemically cleaned both of my mufflers and had good results. Have you cleaned out the exhaust port? My bet is on the exhaust port rather than the muffler being plugged.
