Newbie scooter collection
Here's some shots of my collection. 84 Iowa Spree, 83 Urban express, and my two homemade wooden lawnmower powered creations with a nautical theme. I am still waiting for info on my hard cold starting problem with my Spree. My friend has an 86 with the same phenomena.

Take a look in the Wikispreedia for info on bystarter operation and testing.fairlead wrote: I am still waiting for info on my hard cold starting problem with my Spree.
"Get answers to your questions right now:Wikispreedia" is the way it appears at the top of EVERY topic heading.
Your bystarter may be okay and the problem might be remedied by a thorough carb cleaning.
There is a very teeny-weeny hole that fills a separate reservoir inside the carb bowl.
This reservoir serves to supply fuel to the bystarter circuit and will cause very hard starts when this hole is plugged or reduced by varnishing or debris.
Look for the hole that connects the float bowl to the bystarter reservoir and inspect for flow.
The pilot jet is also a very critical element to start-up and especially IDLING.
Vacuum passages are also very critical to proper operation.
A little time searching the Wikispreedia may answer your questions as they arise.
Cyber-diagnosis is difficult at best given the lack of specific symptoms and pics are always helpful.
G'luck and report back with findings and results....

Re: Newbie scooter collection
Thanks for the tips. I will pull the carb again and check for blockage between the bi
starter and the bowl. I had the carb off once and cleaned it already, but every time you pull it you find new orifices you didn't know about before. This one idles well once running. My friend ( a retired lady of about 65 with a 86 spree with 765 miles on her clock has exactly the same symptoms. Would love to get to the bottom of this.

Re: Newbie scooter collection
P. S. Honda Spree: Rode one when I was 15, belonged to this kid named Jimmy Janes. He let me do a loop up and over an overpass in Muskegon, MI. I've been hooked ever since. To me it is not the fastest, quickest, best looking or anything else but I consider it the "Mazda Miata" of the scooter world. Really glad to finally own one after 25 years. A friend has a "Special Edition" with 6000 mi and all the original junk including the white key and I might buy it also. I'd like to own one of every color some day. Thanks to all you guys for the tips.
