89 Elite SA50, Can't get spark from spark plug

Post by sleeperelite »

Asking for help. Picked up a Cosmic Blue SA50 for $75 with the only issue being that it is not running. Ignition coil was cut in half so ordered up the new part and new spark plugs. Scoot turns over and is receiving fuel. Checked with both new spark plugs and no spark. Connected my multimeter to check the ignition coil continuity test and get 0.1 ohms on the primary coil resistance however the secondary coil resistance is below the 7.4k ohms. I noticed that the resistance does not change whether the kill switch is on or off.

Shouldn't there be more resistance with the switch in the run position? Do I need to bypass the kill switch somehow or am I on the completely wrong path.

Any and all help is appreciated!

Have had my head in this manual since the day before I picked this scoot up. Will start from the plug cap and work my way back again and check the switch's continuity as well. Was hoping the description of my problem would light a few light bulbs in someone's head.

Section 16 is the trouble shooting section of the manual. You will have to check the wiring and switches. I would check the emergency switch and related wiring. Some people use that to shut off the scooter instead of the key switch. Failure of the ignition components is rare but the manual has specific electrical tests for each part of the system. Good luck.

Turns out it is my alternator exciter coil/stator. Check all my resistances and they only resistances out of range relate to my stator. Double-checked my ignition coil and spark plug with my CH80 and they work perfectly.

Got a second one lying around so will swap it out and hope for luck. If not, question is to rewire one or see if I can pick up another on the cheap somewhere.

A post in the Wanted/For Sale section can be a big help at times.

If this spare stator coil is busted also, that was my plan
