1985 nb50 belt troubles

Post by uk-visionsa50 »

having problems with the belt on my nb50, when started and revved it sounds like a grinding noise coming from the variator area, the plate with the splines on comes loose ive tried loads of times to fix it and cant figure out what it is, how do i install a new belt ? methods etc, and what other issues could be causing this ?
A good toolkit is a hammer and a condom. If the hammer doesn't fix it, Use the condom to f**k it!

splines on crank look fine but theres some sort of oil/black grease on the starter bendix ? thought it was all meant to be ungreased etc

Greetings:

Hmm, I thought it might. Examine the six little "teeth" on the outer drive pulley as well as the turret on the kicker. You may see some scuffed bare metal. Contact between the two occurs when the cover is installed without a gasket or if the kickstarter mechanism gets sticky and doesn't retract. Fit the correct gasket if you can get/make one - or at least shim out the cover with some washers at the bolt. If it's the kicker, disassembly and lube with a thick grease often solves the issue.

Greetings:

No need to eliminate the useful kickstart. Just ensure clearance with a gasket or shim washers.

thanks for that wheelman, have put the spacers in for now and she seems to be running good for now, going to order gasket set off of ebay and install gasket to be on safe side.

The rollers could be out of place. That usually happens when the belt breaks or the drive face comes loose while the engine is running.
Spinning rear tire while idling (1800 rpm or less) is a good indication of out of place rollers.
Grinding noise from the variator is another one.

id change the rollers and belt while youre in there, how did you tighten the nut on the drive face? have you tried using a piston stopper and then tightening it with a normal socket ? it could be that the nut isnt being tightened up enough and is simpy vibrating loose, happened to me on my speedfight2, if you cant get your hands on the piston stopper use a impact wrench, if you need any help im only a few miles from you, happy to pop over and give you a hand if you like. pm me and let me know. :)

i was thinking about changing belt and rollers but i wont have enough cash until after xmas to buy them, i jammed a spanner into the teeth of the drive face and tightened with a socket wrench, i do have a piston stopper but lost the spark plug socket so cant get my plug out right now

so redvisionmonster came over and "fixed" the problem for me, it lasted for about 20 miles and then the same thing happened again, finally getting fed up of not having a working scooter i gave in and took it to a specialist honda mechanic, he says the starter bendix needs replacing or fixing but reckons for the labour involved in rebuilding the bendix it would be cheaper to just replace it £30 off ebay $50-$60ish. he says the belt has got around 400-500 miles left in it and the rollers are ok for now but would need to be replaced in total hes quoted me £100 or $180ish to fix it all, if i have a working scooter, i dont mind, thing is i could buy the parts for £50 $90ish and probably do it myself. should i let him do it or should i do it? that is the question, i dont really want to screw things up. is there any guides on how to replace these parts ?
