Honda Spree final drive/transmission problems- STUMPED

Post by Guitargraham »

So I finally got my spree back up to snuff after a troublesome engine swap. (stock)
The thing starts up unbelievably easy and idles away forever. Super great.
However, when I took it out for a test ride, the scooter's engine revved waaay up and didn't move the scooter that much.
After a short trip around the block, the spree's engine was smoking slightly because it was so hot.
I took off the side belt cover again, (After I installed gasket that wasn't there before) and the belt looks awesome!
It runs and technically rides, but I know somethings up with the transmission/belt. I have owned a spree before and the engine doesn't rev that high when its under load!
I also had to put oil in the transmission because it had none when it was shipped to me. I put in 10w-40.

BTW also have kickstart assembly I would like to sell complete with everything....

Thank you so much in advance. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Pm'd.

Sounds to me like your belt is slipping or you have a bad clutch. If you say your belt is good no shaving or anything i would inspect your clutch pads. I had a very similar problem were my spree would rev up high and studder at the starts then slip at higher rpm's new clutch fixed it.

Greetings:

Suggest you remove belt cover and see if you can spin the rear pulley while holding the drive pulley still. If your hand can overcome the grip of the belt, so can the engine torque. If that's tight, a clutch disassembly is in order. Worn pads or sticky pivots are two causes of Slip.

Before replacing or taking something apart, it may just need some cleaning - a spot of grease on the belt, dirty/oily drive or driven pulley surfaces, etc.

If the belt is the right one, and is within spec, and the clutch pads are in spec, you might try cleaning all the pulley surfaces, inside of the clutch bell, and clutch pads with brake cleaner.

I agree with breeze, brake clean is your friend. Clean the clutch pads as well and rough them up a little just deglaze them with some sand paper like 120 maybe and clean them again and deglaze the inside of the clutch bell as well and clean it again. A couple people have solved weird clutch issues doing that.
