83 Aero 50 questions

Hey guys! I have only asked a couple of questions on here, mainly been lurking in the background learning some things about my scooter. This site has been really helpful to me!

I got my 1983 Aero 50 in September 2012. My neighbors were cleaning out their garage because they were moving. I was helping them move a sink when I saw it and fell in love. I finally convinced them to sell it to me and got a great deal. It had been sitting in their garage since it was last on the road in 1991 so I drained the fuel and oil then put fresh stuff in it along with a small dose of Seafoam (in the gas). Then I got a new air filter from Honda, a new spark plug, and battery. It started after the first few cranks! I was so happy!! After I knew it would run, I degreased the variator, put a new belt, a new tire, then buffed and polished all the plastics. She can only hit about 33mph on flat land (I'm a big boy)...but I've put about 150 miles on it and am loving every minute of it.

I do have a couple of questions. First, I get that flat spot at WOT. I've read that putting a bigger main jet in the carb will cure this, but I have no idea what size I should go up to. Next, the oil that I put in it is not synthetic, just 2-stroke oil...will there be any benefits to going to synthetic oil? Also, what brand of synthetic do you guys recommend?

Welcome. That's not a scooter. It is a jewel in a Time Capsule. Style-wise, I think it's a more handsome Aero than the '85 and later.
33 isn't a bad or unexpectedly slow top speed for this model. Not sure what you mean by "Flat Spot" but be careful messing with jetting. If you're handy and can let us know what jet currently resides in your carb, advice - good and bad - may follow. Before installing the new air filter (I can't believe you could still get one!), did you soak it in oil and wring out the excess? That may be the issue with your carburetion if not.

Stock engines run a really long time on Honda's own GN-2, which is what i recommend.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply! I love this thing. My friends bought Chinese scooters...but mine always gets the most attention.

What i mean by the flat spot is that the engine kinda bogs down when the throttle is wide open I'd say at about 80%-85% throttle it does this. It's really noticeable. How would I check what size jet? I'm a mechanic, so I'm pretty sure I can figure it out once I take the plastics off to get a look at the engine. All I know is that it is stock. The person that I bought it from told me he didn't do anything to it, and he is the original owner. As far as the air filter...I did not. What should I soak it in, the Honda oil?

It's astonishing that it even started after 22 years! The carb SHOULD have been hopelessly caked with fuel resins turned to Epoxy. Mine was after sitting "only" for about 15! Maybe the '83 carb had all of its rubber its lines on the vents slowing evaporation?

You will find a Manuals section in this forum Index that is very helpful. I've never perused the 1983-'84 version, but chances are that the foam filter element should be soaked in regular 4-cycle motor oil - the '87 Aero manual specified 10W-30 but it really doesn't matter all that much.

The oil does two things:

1. It snags dust particles and holds them in the sponge before they can be inhaled to scuff up your bore, and ...
B. It increases the negative pressure (Vacuum) upstream of the carb and thus indirectly richens the mixture - the same size jet "Acts" like a bigger one.

I wouldn't open up the carb unless you have a pressing need to see what size its jet is. Like I said, it's running now. I suspect all it needs is some oil on its filter element to run even better.

If you put an ounce of Sea Foam in the tank and run it, in a short while it will clean out the carb and hopefully fix your bog point. As the Wheelman said I would be reluctant to disassemble to carb if you don't have to. If you do, it is detailed in Wikispreedia on this forum.

i also just picked up a blue 83 nb50.. i have a question... where is a good place to buy a belt? for the life of me i cant find one for the 83-84... sorry to hijack
