'00 honda elite S dies @18mph with throttle fully engaged

Post by Stikybandit »

hello-
i've got a 2000 honda elite S that has the following problem:
i've had it for 3 years now, always started it up to have it warm up just because
but recently after a good summer of crusing around on it, its developed a strange bogging down/dying action

itll take off fine, get up to speed like nothing is wrong with it, then at 18-20mph with throttle fully engaged itll act like its dying, it'll bog down and i'll have to * the throttle back and forth really fast, like it needs gas, and it'll catch and go, then start bogging down and i'll have to continously pull throttle back n forth,

i've cleaned the carb
new battery
new spark plug
i've messed with air intake valve and idle screws
i've tried pulling the oil tube that mixes with the gas out and tried mixing 50/1 in the gas tank but nothing

is there maybe a wire disconnection somewhere? has anyone dealt with something like this?
i've got about 4,700Mi on it now.
always put premium gas in.

again, it'll start up fine, electric start works, it'll take off great act like nothings wrong then 18mph with throttle fully engaged it'll just bog down and want to die if i didnt' play with the throttle back n forth like my wrist is spasming.

please let me know. appreciated the thoughts and comments.

Are there any air leaks on the air box. Is the air box hooked up correctly?

I had the same issue last year with the same scoot. I cleaned the carb twice but come to find out the main jet kept getting a little piece of something in it. Make sure you can see a clear round hole through the main jet and also when idling spray some either around airbox and intake manifold to check for air leaks. Good luck

The main jet has my vote, I was able to pull the whole tube out, which is not recomended because its easy to damage. I had a parts carb that I used to practice on. Best off letting it set in carb cleaner overnight. Good luck, don't forget to check plugged exhaust possibilities.

Re: main jet tube.
Thanks for those who responded.
Is the main jet tube you're talking about the tube from
Tank to carb?
I'm a very non engine head just want to make sure
This sounds like this could work. And how do I check for exhaust plugs?

I would definitely try to clean the carb. I had the same issue with mine when I bought it. I soaked my carb in carb cleaner over night and then I sprayed it with more carb cleaner. You should also check to see if someone has already derestricted your scooter. If so, youre going to have to upjet. Just take some time and read through the technical documents. Lots of useful information on this forum. I have literally no mechanic knowledge of knowledge of scooters and I was able to get my scooter running. If I can, you can too :D
