84 spree carb with #65 jet?

Post by Arlie1180 »

I have a 1984 Honda spree NQ50. The original carburetor came with a number 68 jet, which I think is the standard. Unfortunately the original carburetor had to be replaced do to needle valve issues. The replacement carburetor I now have has a number 65 jet. I think the Iowa restricted models came with a number 62 jet. I am guessing this carburetor is a Iowa restricted that has the jet upside. The question I have is for the throttle cable needle position and air fuel mixture. I have read several threads about air fuel mixture and how to adjust most of them very helpful. however do I treat this as a number 62 with an up jet or a number 68 with a down jet ? meaning if I treated it like #62 I would set throttle cable needle clip to the #62 jet position and set air gas mixture screw to the #62 jet position, and then adjust it lean? or do I set the throttle cable needle clip and air/mix for a number #68 jet and adjust it richer? I plan to buy #68 jet soon but I'm frustrated with myself for not being able to figure this out. hoping a fresh look on the situation will help. Thanks :-)

65 is Iowa 68 is standard. It won't run right with out a 68 in it. Needle in the middle position and set idle air mixture and idle speed according to the manual spec. And of course air box all proper.

thanks for the super fast response! :-) this may seem like a dumb question but if the carburetor with #65 jet is set to the Iowa specs will it run okay at restricted speeds. or does it need the restricted muffler and other Iowa restrictions? sorry fairly new at this only been working on mopeds for about a year.

Way easier to just pop a 68 jet in it an be done, easier to get a jet than to track down an Iowa pipe that's restricted. Who wants a restricted spree that would suck. Used pipes are a gamble you might get one that is all plugged up, or rotten so it wouldn't show up till you tried to clean it. My theroy for the 65 is when you restrict exhaust flow that much it gets richer so a smaller jet is needed hence the 65 as opposed to the 68 I'm guessing. The differences between Iowa and non Iowa sprees is in the the wikispreedia.

thank you very much. I definitely plan on purchasing a 68 jet, but that might explain why I have had such a hard time tuning in the carburetor as a 65 or a 68. I was beginning to think I was cursed. again thanks very helpful. going to get that 68 ordered :-D
