What does a BBK exactly do?

Does your Spree/Elite already run great, and you're trying to make it quicker/faster? Need a monster motor swap? Discuss your ideas here.

What does a BBK exactly do?

Post by nick9345 »

Hey guys. I was just wondering what a simple BBK would do to a honda spree (1985) What kind of boost does it give your moped? And whats the price range? Thanks

Nick: the only BBK I know of that will fit Spree motor is sold by member tazland001.
He sells on ebay also under the name: chopchop123
The major companies like Polini, Malossi, etc. don't even bother to make one if that tells you something.
Most people here are uninterested in investing in a Spree modification.
It's preferred by most to swap in a bigger motor.
The subject is widely controversial.
I have the opinion that Spree is an excellent, reliable scooter best left alone and kept in stock form.
Edit: Mopeds are not scooters...Scooters are not mopeds...the difference is obvious...Mopeds have pedals that are operated just like a bicycle...Scooters have either kick-starter or electric or both. Mopeds have 16-17 inch wheels...Scooters are mostly 10-12 inch wheels....Make this mistake again and you will receive a late-night visit from the wedgie-squad.... :bowrofl:

add up what you will minimally spend on a rebuilt (one rider) spree.... (now add $100 just to be safe)...

then go get this for $400
d*** I wish I lived closer... would already have it in the garage...

..Very good advice...especially considering the Kymco you linked...I wonder if it needs a carb or the seller is just thinking that. Wheelman could pull the trigger on this, and then hold it for me to pick up while riding the snot out of it.... :thumbwink: ...[after fixing, of course]

d*** jealous... I doubt it needs a carb ('09? bet it needs nothing but a lil cleaning) ... and these are easy to work on with a great forum like this if needed...

And if this scoot is still available... DO NOT assume you will find another, basically new People for this amount (they sell all day long in short season states for a grand ... much older with thousands of kms/miles... remember the speedo is in kms not miles (this works in your favor...)
Where I live it would be sold in less than a day (probably a few hours) within $50 of the asking price...

In order to answer your question Nick:

BBK stands for Big Bore Kit
it consists of a cylinder and piston that increase the cc's of the engine.
you simply remove the old cylinder and piston and replace with bbk.
this will permit the engine to make more power
the main reason that Spree is a poor candidate is based mainly on the fact that Spree is a non-variated engine.
with a bbk, it will make more power, but is limited by the transmission.... :urban:

Remember the BBK alone doesn't really give higher top end speed, just more torque. Changing the gear ratio, is the key. Here lies the spree limitations, the drive train (no variator meaning it has a fixed gear ratio). You can change the gear ratio of the final drive gears but you need the big bore kit for the extra low end grunt to make up for the slow take off the gears create. Its kind of like having a manual transmission of your car stuck in a higher gear all the time so more power is needed to have the takeoff be decent.
