Are there different size "christmas tree gears???"
The one that touches the starter gear to the driveface.
Mine looks like its touching but its missing wen i try to start it. This is from my af16 block.

The device you're describing engages the outer pulley sheave, correct? Some call it a Bendix, for the company that made the device popular. It should pop out to engage. If it's stuck, it might not. Same goes if the teeth are rounded off. Also, some belts are shimmed out for ZX transmission, and out of reach or just Barely in reach of the fully-extended Bendix. Any of the above can cause your apparent issue. Consider a little shim washer behind the Bendix's little shaft to hold it further outboard.

So the little teeth on the starter motor shaft aren't touching those on the shoulder of the Bendix? Is there something preventing the Bendix from seating all the way down into the crankcase? That short little shaft can be tricky to thread into its hole back there, or maybe there's a mud dauber keeping it out. Pics would help.
