Replaced muffler, lost 5 mph.

Post by kurremkarm »

My 84 spree had a hole in the muffler when i bought it but it would do 30 mph with no problems, it was just a bit loud. So i hit ebay and bought a muffler and put it on and now it is nice and quiet and it lost all its balls.

It's slower off the line and it's top speed is 25. The pipe seems to be letting exhaust out.

Do working mufflers reduce speed by 5 mph? I could just put the old one on or punch a hole in it. I hate to keep buying mufflers and hoping i get one that isnt corroded or restricted.

What would you do?

check for a restricter place. Remove it if it has one.

I know I had to that for my friend's metropolitan. I don't know if the Sprees have them or not.

very few sprees have em..iowa models have em. Look at the end if you see a plate where it bolts to engine..grind it out. (take off exhaust)

Nice and quiet? Too quiet, I bet. You have a dirty exhaust. Read tech docs on cleaning them. Fire or chemical, your choice.

I took it off and put my old loud one on. Threw the pos away it was only 17 bucks delivered. My time is worth more than screwing with that thing again.

Do me a favor, pull it back out of the trash, saw off the downpipe and mail it to me. I'll pay you for it.

Yep; should be the same as Spree. PM me for details.

I got a chance to ride the new pipe (V2) around last night for 30 minutes. Bogs a bit on takeoff, launches good from 15 MPH all the way to 35 MPH. This on a '85 with no mods that barely touched 30 before. Nice and angry sounding like a dirt bike. I like it.
