is there a specific tool i need or does anyone have a technique that they would like to share?

Take a 1/4" socket and hold it in the palm of your hand, grab the piston with the same hand and line up the socket to pin and pull your hand together. Don't hit it with anything as it can make your con rod go side to side and that's no good. I use a piston pin puller, search on eBay or wherever but they're cheap and saves stress on the con rod.
