header/exhaust heat wrap

Post by refl3x »

I have some left from my car, would it be beneficial to wrap my exhaust pipe with it?

Greetings:

Looks tough, but of course the plastics cover the toughness.
I've never quite understood the theory of Heat Wrap. Maybe increased average temperatures - from insulation - increase the average pressure a tad. Whether or not that results in higher-force pressure wave "supercharging" from the echoes in the chamber, I'm not sure.

for cars its normally to keep heat out of the engine bay.On the scooter it does nothing but hide dirty welds and quietens done some resonating sounds in the header

^ I dont know if saying it does "nothing" is accurate though. the exhaust is fairly close to the engine and if you prevent the heat from the pipe from radiating out near the engine i would assume it may keep the engine slightly cooler. It would probably be hard to prove this but Honda did put small heat shields on the OEM exhausts on the first bend, I would assume that was for the wiring? I dont know why they did it but again I can assume it wasn't for nothing. I was just curious if anyone knew more then me about the subject. like I said I have extra wrap, I've ridden the scoot long enough to get it (too) hot so im going to wrap the pipe and keep the difference it may make in mind for future reference.

i have heard that heat wrap makes a pipe more brittle faster that if it didnt have the on .But dont quote on that .My show car has heat wraped headers but mainly for the looks

I've read that there is a chance that if it gets wet it can hold the moisture and in that way damage the pipe but that was on a website that claimed to have a better alternative (ceramic coating) I also read from a wrap-pro site that it is waterproof and that wasn't true, so who knows. I do know that certain applications the wrap somewhat "melts" onto the header and can damage the finish ( like a chrome or coated header) but as far as "performance" goes i dont know if there is any negatives to it.
