I think the 89 uses a lot of the same parts as the 94-01 but don't quote me on that. Start off with a high speed variator. You can play around with variator weights such as lighter weights=quicker acceleration and better for hills and such since it allows the engines rpms to stay in the power band. I've always used Polini bbk's. I've used both the corsa and contesta with good results. A Polini corsa is a power house and you can get 50 mph+ with one using a stock pipe and gears. I've used a 24mm OKO on both my builds and think that its the way to go especially if you're upgrading the exhaust. If you're keeping the stock exhaust at least make sure its not the restricted one with the washer welded into the entrance of it. If so just drill it out. Before you do a whole lot of upgrades you're going to want to get a Cylinder Head Temp Gauge (CHT) and possibly a tach. A lot of guys use a trail tech vapor or trail tech's indivdual temp and tach gauges. This is critical for making sure the carb is jetted correctly to prevent lean seizure and to see what each change does to your power band. Also if you're going the BBK route it's a good idea to remove the oil injection pump and run premix. The OKO carbs require it anyway, not sure about other carbs. I always run 32:1. If you're in need of tires in the near future switch to a 90/90-10 tire. Theyre a little bit taller and a little wider than the stock 3.00-10 as well as being more stable depending on which brand you go with.

Re: 1989 Honda elite lx help
thanks! ive looked for the Polini bbks and cant find one that fits a "89" elite.. is there a nother moped that uses the same motor thats in my 89? ive found a pipe and variator im going to buy this week.. what gram rollers do you suggest? and what about clutch springs? thanks for the help man!
Re: 1989 Honda elite lx help
I'm not sure what motor the 89 elite has exactly. I know the 94-01 has an sa50 (or af16 to be exact). When i searched parts I looked for sa50. If I remember correctly the earlier elites had se50 engines. Again don't quote me on that. Im sure you can find it in a search.
Remember that you can't just slap on a bigger pipe with out at least re-jetting the carb, it'll run lean and hot and probably lead to seizure. This is where a temp gauge is almost critical to have and it would be the first thing I installed.
I never felt the need to change out the clutch springs. But the torque spring or contra spring (not sure the name of it but its the big one that seperates the clutch pulley in the rear) I have done. I used a red one from Daywot on ebay. I think its a 1000 rpm spring. Basically its a stronger spring in the rear that will resist shifting and keep you in a lower gear for a longer period in time which keeps your rpms up helping your acceleration with taller gears. As for weights, with my setup, I bought a set of Polini rollers also from Daywot. Keep in mind i had 9:1 gears, but I used (3) 7.6 gram weights and (3) 6.6 gram weights= 42.6 grams. Stock variator weight total is about 49 grams.
some good parts places are
Daywot on ebay
VT cycles.com
scooterswapshop.com (has some of the best deals on bbk's)

Another thing I forgot to mention. When you're first starting out doing mods, try only doing one thing at a time. Thats how I like to do it. I think it gives a much better perspective as to what each mod does and how it affects tuning. However If you're going the bbk route I would wait until you have both the big bore and a bigger carb. It can be kinda tricky tuning a stock carb to a big bore and it's not the most ideal thing.
