Broken piston ring.

Post by fujioko »

Thanks all for the help in the previous post. Here is something interesting..

Anyway the $40.00 Spree ran well. So I put in a new battery and rode the bike around the yard and in the street. The max speed was about 25 mph however it had trouble going up a slight incline. The speed would drop to zero!.

I read up on the tech stuff and decided to decarbonizes the exhaust.. sure enough it was more or less plugged. I put the exhaust in the barbeque and stoked up the coals. 14 hours later the exhaust crap was burned out.

I also cleaned the exhaust port.. being very careful not to nick the piston. Gave the carb a quick clean. And put the bike back together. Awesome performance the bike ran like new.!

The next day the bike wouldn├óÔé¼Ôäót start. I checked the compression and it was only pumping 30PSI. Off came the engine and I pulled the head and cylinder to check the rings.. sure enough the second ring was broken. Very odd.

I ordered up a ring and gasket set the bike should be running within a week.

Any theories as to why the ring broke?

The bike had just over 4000 miles. Judging by the lack of tool marks on the fasteners, it would appear the engine was never rebuilt.

Or a piece of carbon got stuck and made the ring hang up?

Well it would appear that my Spree fits the profile of a high mileage engine failure. The good news is the parts only cost $35.00.

Yeah, I had to stand in line at the cycle shop.. All these tough guys ordering up parts for real motorcycles├óÔé¼┬ª and then there├óÔé¼Ôäós me├óÔé¼┬ª ├óÔé¼┼ôplease may I have piston rings for my wimpy little scooter├óÔé¼┬Ø

Sometimes the fun is not in the raw power, but how you use what little you have.
