90/90 Tire

Post by appleboy64 »

Hello again, I have a 1986 aero 50 and noticed many people recommend a 90/90 tire for it. Will this add performance? More stability? Also what kind of parts would I need for the swap, new wheel? Thanks for all the help.

Greetings:

The Upside:
The 90/90 will spoon over your current rim, possibly using your current tube. Still, consider getting a 3.00-3.30 tube to avoid stretching the stock tube, which is designed for tires up to 3.00. The 90 is considerably taller than your 2.75" stock tire, affording just a bit more cush to supplement your shock's measly 2" of travel. Arguably, the grip might improve along with stopping distances.
The beefier look will almost certainly win the admiration of your rivals and the fairer sex, but don't look for Leggy Supermodels to surrender their virtue; you are riding a scooter after all.

The Downside:
The 90s are designed to go with a 2.15" rim width. Prying it onto a rim that's only 1.85" makes the profile shape up funny, sort of like a light bulb. I didn't notice a handling issue, but I don't ride on tracks. Fortunately, the Metropolitan 2.15" rims are fairly easy to score on fEeBaY or on the Total Ruckus website. They are a bolt-on replacement without any added parts, but the added cost must be considered. You can run Tubeless with those Met rims. Don't do tubeless if you keep your Aero rim - it will hold air, but there's a risk of catastrophic deflation if you hit a sharp bump. Clearance with the engine case wasn't an issue on my own Aero - Flashes I and II - but you may need to widen and lengthen the centerstand bacause of the extra height and width.

Most of my money is spent on scooterparts. The rest is just wasted.

you should also replace the front rim with with an elite-s 94-01 you will have to get the larger brake pads, the 90x90 tire will also fit, replace the stock vaiator with an aftermarket one and should do an easy50 mph.

Apple, I'd recommend going for a set of metro wheels. You'll still need the elite front brake panel, but the 90/90's fit perfect on those wheels!! Also if you msg curtis966, I believe he has a mint set for sale....

Thanks guys! I will eventually build another af05 that I'll need either the super long malossi's or dio 8.4:1's for, but the original 85 2 bolt af05 in there now will be kept "slightly" more mild. I've got a set of se50 10:1's on the work bench:))
