Muffler mod

Post by DYLANHSMITH »

I was reading on all hte different muffler modifications that help by causing less restricion on the exhaust. I figured to test if this helped i would take off the muffler compleatly and run it. After doing this it went no faster, posssibly even slower and at full speed backfired and sputtered. It also was louder than i could possibly have imagined. Was the reason it didnt go faster because there was absolutly no back preasure at all? Also if i do the mod where you drill a hole in the muffler will that be helpful and will it be much louder?

Thanks

Your stock muffler is designed for efficiency, and power (to a limited extent). Without a muffler to create back pressure, fuel goes out the exhaust port, and nowhere. It is wasted, and plus, taking the muffler off probably made your jetting lean.

No, that's different. Removing the muffler completely ruins the exhaust port plugging. Drilling out the stock muffler just reduces backpressure.

What I've found, though, is that a clean muffler is usually a big improvement by itself. Everyone drills out their dirty mufflers rather than cleaning them. Do yourself a favor, go to tech docs and read up on cleaning mufflers.
