Polini or Malossi kit? for my af18e

Post by patthesoundguy »

I see so many people running the polini corsa bbk on dio motors. Are they that much better than the malossi kit? Which kit should I get. I'm leaning towards the corsa just because everyone seems to have one and seem happy with them. I just want to get my best bang for my buck.

Greetings:

Both are high-quality, hand-crafted Italian products. Bakaracer runs an MHR 72 to 80 MPH on the track. My Polini went fastest of all my setups, albeit with the most time spent fine-tuning. Both are durable. I sold my MHR kit to a Forum member with a piston that looked new with several hundred miles with compression over 170. The Malossi boost port is already set up at the same size as you AF18, so that's a plus for Malossi unless you purchase the Polini kit for that specific block. You can't go far wrong with either one.

Hi PTSG.
I own three polini corsa BBK and never had any problems.
I over heated my spreedio to 425 degrees and it held up good no problems.
I don't own a malossi. so I don't have info on it.

the boost port on the af18 is very small i had to open it up to match the corsa.I have fitted the malossi cast to a af18 and the boost port could have done with some opening up it wasnt a perfect match but also it wasnt the alloy mhr

So the corsa and mhr are in the same league. thats why the corsa is more expensive than the standard malossi kit. I get it now. Thanks guys. I'm ready to drop the cash for a kit so I'll be ready to get the whole dio spree build ready to rock with the least amount of headache.

As far as mid range performance goes, I have heard the MHR is a bit more rounded for scooting around town. How will a corsa jive with a v8 pipe?

For certain the MHR is not more for around town, its more of a race cylinder than the milder ported corsa. The reason the corsa flows more out the box is because of the boost port size.
Also it is not a perfect fit on AF18s for the MHR. Both cylinders require you to open up the boost port area on a 16 or 18. If you dont you run the risk of burning up your piston. Too each their own but Id rather do it right the first time.
The Corsa is more of an around town cylinder in my experiences due to quicker pressure changes with in. Also it has a high rpm ceiling so it can be tame or fun if matched correctly to a pipe. I dont recommend a V8 pipe for anything but large cylinders and stroker set ups. Im coming to terms that the PG short is for stock to mild cylinders. The shorter the chamber the higher the RPM, what happened there PhonGear?
If you continue to run at 425 more than a few times you will see a hole form in your piston crown. If you dont believe me pull your head off and you will see some nice burn areas in a tear drop formation already. Warping a cylinder can also happen at those temp if sustained too long then cooled rapidly.
Ive personally hit 91 on a MHR 72cc extremely ported on a kymco sc10as and other hit over 80 regularly. I know of 3 zx50s in the US that can do over 80 on MHRs. One is with a mini stroked 44.1mm crank and non ported 72cc MHR. Later he did switch to corsa after burning up a few pistons on the MHR. My MHR sc10as has over 5k miles now and is brought to 75 MPH+ on near every trip so they can take some abuse as long as theyre dialed in right.
Now onto the pistons of the MHR vs Corsa, I heavily feel the piston quality is better on the corsa, but the MHR just feels like its all race when you have the pistons next to each other. The MHR can and will burn up a piston quicker than the Corsa, tried and true. I always run a 25% 110/ 75 % 93 octane mix with 32:1 on my MHRs.
The corsa is easier to tune and can take a bad tune for longer than the MHR. The unported MHR will scare you from stops more than the unported Corsa. I think its like owning a Ferrari (MHR) or a Porsche (Corsa even though both are italian). Are you a Ferrari man or a Porsche man.

MHR bridged boost port

Corsa non bridged boost port, smaller but more area due to no bridge.

Both are non ported stock ports for the Malossi MHR and Polini Corsa. Theres measurements somewhere onsite.

No doubt both kits can do 75+ its all in the tune of the engine and trans combined. Also both tires play a major role in speeds over 60.
I love Corsas and MHRs, and just now finding out how the Fabrizi will be.
