Adjustable Starter limit switch?

Post by wtdash »

I just 'inherited' a '97 Elite CH 80 w/49 original miles. Spent most of it's life in a garage, but it's not primo - some cosmetic damage riding on the back of an RV.

New battery, plug, fuel, added a fuel filter, new air filter and cleaned the carb (probably not as well as Bear would recommend  ) and it wouldn't start, but turned over fine.

Not sure why but I let out the left brake lever and as I did the scooter started - WTH??

So, it'll start every time if hold the lever in just the right spot, but not if it's held in place by the 'lock'. It doesn't turn over if the brake lever is left off (as it should).

Is this adjustable? Or is the switch bad? Or should I just 'deal w/it'.

Thanks and if there's a dedicated CH 80 forum, I'll try there, but this place has always been great when I had my Sprees.

I wonder if that switch is ran through the brake light switch on the lever. If is does I suppose you might see if your brake light also works in the same manner. Either way I would track down what signals that whether it is a separate micro switch or the brake one. Take it apart and clean the contacts with some light grit sand paper. The copper forms that green crud over time and makes conductivity sketchy.

Brake switch on the CH80 appears still available for around $12 from Honda

Here's a pic of a dis-assembled switch. It's difficult to get the locking tab released from the switch body (tab fits the rectangular feature in pic below)
