When the engine is running, carbon builds up in the exhaust. When you ask a simple question, you get a simple answer.

If you want a more detailed answer, as a more detailed question-moron...

The carbon will build up in the muffler no matter if the bike is new or old. if you want to know how to tell if there is a larger then normal build up in the muffler, tap the muffler with a screwdriver while the engine is off and cool. If it makes a resinating sound, then your most likely ok. If you tap it, and it doesnt resinate, just a clunk kind of noise, chances are you have a extreme build up. remove the muffler, and use one of the recommended methods to clean it from the tech docs section.
