Spree lost its oomf.
So I have an 84 spree with 5200 miles on it. Had noiseguy's muffler and it was going 33 or so. Then one day it sorta stopped going fast. It just wont get up to speed.
So i cleaned the carb with the seafoam.
Then i Cleaned my air filter.
The i checked my plug and it was fouled, and it was brown with a chunk missing from it. Replaced that plug.
Still sucks. Go into the wind and it wont go past like 23 mph.
So i take another stock muffler that i had lying around and i filled it with seafoam and let it sit. Then i took the garden hose and hosed it out for about 5 minutes. Stuck it on the bike and drove it til it stopped smoking.
Then i got a 12" 1/4 inch drill and drilled out the baffles.
So now i have a spree that will do 25-28 mph. It runs smooth and doesn't hesitate. Starts right up. But this is the same bike that even stock was doing 30 with no problems. That with noiseguys muffler would do 30-34 and now wont go past 24 mph with his pipe on into the wind.
What do you think could be causing this?

Now you feel like I do on my SE50.
Cleaned muffler, removed restrictor in clutch (none in muffler), UNI filter, and bigger main jet, and I have no increase in speed whatsoever. Only 25 with no wind.

If you're interested in learning and if you have the right tools I say: "FIX IT YOURSELF!!!"
Just dive right in! Couple of things though:
- Use the right tools
- Use this forum
- Use a shop/service manual
- On a new procedure, document your steps. You think you'll remember the order of assembly, orientation, etc...but you won't. Take pictures if necessary.
- Patience...
If you plan on riding these old 2-strokes for awhile...you'll save $$$ by fixing things yourself -- that's part of the fun!

First motorcycle engine I worked on was a Rockford Chibi minibike that was in a box of parts. Second was rebuilding the head on my KLF185 ATV. Motorcycle engines aren't hard to work on, and a scooter is even simpler.

New symptom. Not a good one. Where the muffler bolts into the engine there is oil leaking out. A fair amount of oil. There is a gasket in the muffler and the bolts are tight.
What the heck?
So let's assume i buy a new scooter, whats a super low maintenance one that has high parts availability and people will work on them?

Too much oil being injected into it. Weedeaters do that if you mix the gas like I do (guess, and go heavy on the oil).
That's my idea.

Honda Ruckus is Honda's new batch. 4 stroke, so just fill er up with oil, no more auto mix, so an oil change once/year will pretty much be it, and simple to change oil, personally, easier then my generator (I have not done it, but watched).
Elites and Spree's are really low maintance, just that most of us have gotten ours from people who didnt take very good care of them. I was lucky, though, i got my Elite 50 when I was 11, it was used/new, neighbor needed money for his court and lawyer fees (child molestor), so he sold me his Elite 50, that has 120 miles on it, for $1000. Unforunatle though, I didnt know how to maintian it until i was 17. All i knew how to do was to add oil to the resovour, and clean the spark plug, but, cmon, that was 6 years with no maintance
now I take really good care of it, clean the plug every 250 miles, gets tankly seafoam treetments ^_^

We may never know what was wrong with it. Went down to the local dealer today and looked at their kymco agility 50 and various yamahas and what not. Almost dropped a couple grand but then i checked with their service dept and they told me they could rebuild the engine and carb for about 300 bucks so i said, go for it.
I rationalize this as:
1. I don't have to do it.
2. 300 < 2000
3. Why the * not?
