You might also have a froze-up or rusty throttle cable. It may need to be replaced but I would investigate first. Read up about the fuel system as much as you can. There is valuable information available here and a down-loadable service manual. Click on http://hondaspree.net/wiki/index.php5?t ... ce_Manuals

when installed the throttle needle goes all the way through carb, and seats on main jet, so I think its installed ok, throttle actuates, and cable seem free, and clear. why does it die when I hit the brake?

It sounds like somebody "worked on" that scooted, then decided it was time for somebody else to.

when I cleaned the carb I switched out the main jet with a larger one to see how it runs, and it starts easier, but you cant get it to slow down without the brakes, or shutting it off.

but no matter what jet I use I cant control the acceleration, the throttle physically operates ,but doesn't affect idle.

Greetings:

The brake circuit functions to enable the starter relay, but pulling a brake lever isn't supposed to kill the engine. As Bones suggested, someone modified wiring somewhere and lost Gumption.

The throttle should allow the needle into the main jet, sure, but the throttle slide itself should go all the way down to close the throat of the carb with a 1mm gap at the bottom. If it does that, and the engine still races, then air is getting in somewhere else. Check your crank seals, oil pump seal, manifold, carb mount, etc. And don't run this thing until you sort that out, lest you overheat and cook the bore.

I did not adjust the idle because the problem started for the previous owner when it still was running and driving, so I started looking for a failed component first, I also figured I would get the carb clean, put the new jet in and then adjust the idle as needed. I decided however to put the original jet back in to eliminate an extra variable.

I just went through the paperwork/ extra parts I got with the scooter, apparently the previous owner did a variator, and belt upgrade, he also mentioned, that the throttle problem/ runaway condition started shortly after the mods were made, could this be contributing to the problem? Im pretty sure the not running problem, is related to sitting for 2 years, which allowed the carb, and fuel system to become clogged, and generally filthy. Im considering upgrading the carb/intake/ filter set-up. any suggestions, questions, comments? I know IM asking a lot but im pretty new to the whole scooter thing, my other scooter is a 86 spree that runs good, so I haven't got much repair experience as I now need.

Greetings:

And by Idle I think Graphite means the Throttle Stop Screw. Back it all the way out. Remove it, even. Then make sure the throttle slide can drop all the way to the floor of the carb throat. Could be something blocking its channel(s). Consider a kink or snag in the throttle cable if it won't come all the way down when you reconnect the cable. Consider the possibility that the cable's too short, or snagging something in the twist grip. Lots of things it Could be. I'm confident you'll find it.

I decided to cut out the middle man so to speak, and ordered a new carburetor, put it on ,and it fired right up, and is driveable. I just need to dial in the idle speed. Now that that's fixed, Is there an air filter that anyone would recommend ? Id like to replace the air box with a clamp on air filter.

Greetings:

UNI angled pod size 1 inch fits the carb, can foul the shock damper and leans the low range. The airbox isn't all that restrictive for a stock; engine you may gain nothing or little with a pod, but the risk of off-throttle overheat is real. If you Pod, up the Main a size, and richen the needle clip to Max.

Thanks, I think ill just leave the stock airbox on for now. As I said I put a new carburetor on the bike, and I used the stock throttle assy as it sits, but I noticed that the needle that came with the new carb seems thicker, should I change the needle, or just leave it be, would the stock thinner needle be causing my low idle condition?
