Ignition timing?

Post by Bravo462 »

We just rebuilt the engine on my spree and cant get it to fire. Me and my dad belive it is because the ignition timing is off. We have spark, fuel, and compression so that is the last thing we could think of. if anyone has any suggestions on how to get the timing right or any other thing to get it running it would be very helpful. thanks

You sound like you are having my problem. (my spree runs...backwards) I also have spark, compression and fuel but it won't run. Hopefully someone will figure it out for the both of us.

Ignition timing?

In both of these cases the engine was overhauled. Was the crank disassembled in the prossess? If the crank was reassembled with a slight twist it would affect the timing. Another possibility is a twisted crank. On fourcycle camshafts we use offset keys to adjust timing. Could that be a solution in this case.. How about securing anothe flywheel and grinding off the leading edge of the raised metal that triggers the spark. These are just some random thoughts. I may have to take one of mine apart to see whats in there. Chuck

I have a stupid question but it might apply....do you have the left brake on when you try to start it?

Yes - need left brake on to start on the spree and most scooters.

Okay; I looked at my engine. The electronic pickup can be move a little left or right when the bolts are loosened. A little filing with a small rat tail file in the mounting tab holes would allow more movement. You may have to file the tab down with a flat file to clear the engine case. This would allow for several degrees of timing. move toward rotation to advance. Away from rotation to retard. Chuck

the timing is set as it is. It's either the CDI which is my best bet or the regulator which will usually go bad if you run the motor without a battery for a long time. Ir you are using all stock parts then they are all set to the timing set with the pickup and the mag you have on there now.Only after market parts can tend to retard the timing .
