Bad bearing?

Post by AveCat »

Bought a 1987 Spree, got it running but it doesn't sound quite right.
Pulled the trans cover and spark plug and spun the front pulley. Spins free for a turn or so then sticks a bit, then spins free again.

Greetings:

Could be a bearing, but failure of those caged marvels is uncommon compared to piston-cylinder scuffing. I think the latter is far more likely.

Sounds like you are feeling the compression stroke, nothing more...

Greetings:

He pulled the spark plug, MM. One other thing that can catch or feel draggy is the alternator magnet. Removing the head might reveal carbon or debris in the combustion chamber. If not, the base gasket must be sacrificed to inspect the cylinder, then those bearings. In any case stuff must be dismantled.

Greetings:

Just when you hope it's not as bad as you think...
Your diagnosis would appear to be correct, but Yikes! Wha' Happen??

Fortunately you can knock those bad ones out, CLEAN everything, paying special attention to the crank big-end. (I'd probably spend some time in a solvent tank and compressed air...) and rebuild like new with stock or a Taz big-bore kit. We call it "Upgrade Opportunity".

Ordered new bearings already (both sides because why not) and ordered a Taz 48mm kit!

Greetings:

The bad bearing showered its debris on the other bearing for sure, both need to go. The big-end of the crank isn't as exposed, but I'd be sure to clean the snot out of that one, and then maybe do some measuring (Service Manual) to make sure you're not bolting that shiny 48 up to a bad crank.

Will do!

So what new gaskets do I need? Crankcase gasket, head gaskets, and inlet gasket where the reeds are is my current list.

That's pretty much all you need if you lifted the manifold.

Perfect! Thank you so much for the help!! Can't wait to have it running again!

Any clue on the belt size to increase the top speed a bit?
