Lowbeam and Highbeam Both Out On '86 - Easy To Change Bulbs?

Post by stevemarx »

Hi,

I will do the research but it would be great if someone can give me a quick "yea, that's a simple fix..." Battery is fine (been on trickle charger all winter and Spree starts right up), all lights and directionals work fine. Low and high beams both appeared to have crapped out simultaneously in the fall.

Now it's spring and time to tackle the repair.

Any input would be welcome.

Thanks,

Steve

No it's not a simple fix. The headlamp and dash lamps on a Spree ( you do have a spree ? ) run from AC voltage and the engine must run for them to work, the tail lights, brake lights and turn signals all work from DC voltage ( battery ) and that is a completely different system.
Someone recently had a rectifier/regulator causing no headlamp. Sometimes there are faulty contacts in the switch that causes this, sometimes the stator can be defective.
The best thing to do first , is to measure the AC voltage at the bulb with the engine running, that way you will know which direction to procede.
I think it is unlikely that both the high beam and low beam filaments inside the bulb, are open circuit at the same time( but not impossible ).
I also think it is a good idea to include the Make and model of what you are working on, to help others.

run wire from pos of battery to the yellow wire at one of several connectors, behind head lite, at the rectifier, or at the connector down by the starter. if light comes on, then you have a stator or rectifer problem, mine was a rectifer problem.

Thanks, folks for your responses. Sounds like it will be some work, more than just a bulb replacement (which I figured b/c both appeared to go simultaneously and that would be too coincidental to be a bulb issue). It is an '86 Spree NQ50. I did not realize I should have included the latter designation and will do so if I inquire in the future. Thanks again, Steve

It can also be a corroded hi low switch... You don't have to jumper anything to test the light. You can do it with a multimeter. Test the bulb for continuity first then if it checks out fine, check for power at the light with the motor running. Then go check at the regulator for power with the motor running. Got power at the regulator go check the hi low switch. Might not be that hard to fix.

Thank you Steve...yes, all models of Honda scooters are discussed here, so it helps greatly to be clear about the model scooter you are asking about. Aero, Elite, Express, Spree, Helix, Reflex, and many others.

Thanks, again, all. Much appreciated. I think I'll start with my bud who is an electrician and has all the toys.
