Oil Leak by Rear Brake Spring - Spree

Post by XCScott »

Just swapped an 87 motor into my 85 spree. Rode it for awhile and it ran great but when I parked it I noticed oil dripping near the rear brake. I took off the wheel, pulled out all the cable hardware and I am pretty sure it is leaking out of the small rectangular notch in the casting near where the rear brake spring sits (pic). There was also a small piece of metal hanging out (pic). What should I do to diagnose why this is happening and how can I fix it? Is it a gasket issue? It only leaks when driving, I'm assuming from the oil bouncing in the gearcase.

Thanks!

Greetings:

Spontaneous, or right after disassembly-reassembly?
You might check the level by removing the plug with the scooter parked on a level surface. Sometimes it's just over-filled.
Bad gasket, bad seal, or a crack in the case. The latter can get serious real quick, so don't ride until you find the problem.

It doesn't leak at all when its sitting on the stand. I didn't notice anything when swapping engines either. I only notice it after riding, so I am assuming a little bit of oil somehow sloshes out of the hole and that is what I see dripping when I park it. It only drips a few times then stops. The oil level seemed to be good, only a small amount came out on a level surface.

Would not having the top bolt of the transmission case that holds on the rear fender possibly cause this oil leak from the rectangular weep hole?
